Asa appears with his son, David G. Wilkinson, on an 1864 muster
roll for Captain S. H. Dailey's Company, 1st Class
Militia Home Guard (Composed of beats no. 5, 11, & 12 Monroe
Co, AL) Asa mustered in with a gun, David G. without.
Written 06 December 1953:
The name of Wilkinson is likely of Saxon origin. In History the name is noticed as early as the fifth century among the Nomads [should be Normans] of Normandy. The name was associated With Charlemagne whose armies roamed the open plains of Europe many years later. The Wilkinsons were still on the move in 1066 when William the Conqueror marched into the British Isles and took over the Angles. Throughout the history of Great Britain, the name is mentioned here and there. When General Wellington met Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo, in 1815 at least one officer under the British flat was named Wilkinson. During the American Revolutionary War in 1776, General Washington had men of that name fighting under him.
It would be my guess that our branch of the family tree trickled into the Western World about the year 1650, thirty years behind the first Pilgrims/ I have good reason to believe they settled in Pennsylvania, and that at least some of them were of the Quaker Faith. The cold climate of the North, plus the love of independence drove some Wilkinsons farther south. Following the frontier which moved south and west, some of the clan drifted into what is now the Carolinas. There in South Carolina we meet Asa Wilkinson. In the past hundred and fifty years, Asa's descendants have multiplied to a staggering figure. Both living and dead, the number runs into many thousands. That's a lot of kin.
This is the record of the Asa Wilkinson clan beginning around 1800. The record was copied from the family Bible of my uncle, Levi Wilkinson [grandson of Asa Wilkinson] who was born, Nov 4, 1879, and at the age of 74 is living in Frisco City, Alabama. Uncle Levi Wilkinson was a member of a family of eleven children of which one was my father, David Nathaniel Wilkinson. From that recording besides Uncle Levi, there is only one of the eleven children living, who is Uncle Jerry Walter Wilkinson, age 87, born March 12, 1866, and now residing in Alabama, some forty miles distant from Uncle Levi.
For this record, we all be forever indebted to Uncle Levi, since he and I seem to be the only two of the entire clan who have any interest in such matters.
Signed Arthur Francisco Wilkinson

[Copied from the Bible: Note parts in parenthesis ( )were added by Arthur F. Wilkinson; notes in brackets [ ] added by Kendrick Harmon.]
Asa Wilkinson was born in South Carolina about 1805 (the first name of the parents are unknown). In 1825, while still single, he located in Barbour County, Alabama.
ASA WILKINSON AND BETSY DYKES: On December 9, 1827, Asa Wilkinson married Betsy Dykes (an Ala. girl) and settled in Alabama. From this union were born nine children. One of whom was my father David Ginnings Wilkinson, fourth child born April 21, 1836 (which incidentally, is the date of the Battle of San Jacinto, when the Republic of Texas won its independence from Mexico).
From this union nine children were born:
Martha Ann Wilkinson 12-22-1828
Jonathan Pinkney Wilkinson 2-17-1831
Nancy Matilda Wilkinson 1-16-1830
David Ginnings Wilkinson 4-21-1836
John Daniel Wilkinson 10-6-1840
James Madison Wilkinson 12-6-1842
Mary Ann Wilkinson 4-6-1845
Henry A. Wilkinson 2-27-1848
Tempins S. Wilkinson 12-13-1850 [called Elizabeth on the 1860 census]
[1860 census also shows a daughter/granddaughter? named Francis born 1855? ]
DAVID GINNINGS WILKINSON AND SARAH H BYRD: On January 14 1855, David Ginnings Wilkinson (my grandfather) married Sarah H. Byrd, daughter of Mose Byrd (born January 9, 1838).
From this union were born eleven children:
John Elbert Wilkinson 12-22-1855
James Pinkney Wilkinson 9-2?-1857
[Elizabeth born 1858, see 1860 census, is not listed in the Bible]
Sarah Ann Wilkinson 4-13-1861
David Nathaniel Wilkinson 11-16-1862
Jerry Walter Wilkinson 3-12-1866
Martha Elizabeth Wilkinson 1-31-1868
Moses Lafayette Wilkinson 7-7-1869
Elmira Elora Wilkinson 2-13-1873
Ida Laurence Wilkinson 11-13-1874
Mary Angeline Wilkinson 3-31-1877
Levi Asa Wilkinson 11-4-1879 [Arthur's Uncle to whom the Bible belonged]
Grandfather David and wife settled on a farm near Pineapple, Alabama. [a community named Old Texas] He became a Hardshell Baptist Preacher and at the age of seventy-five, in 1911, he fell dead from a heart attack while preaching from the pulpit.
My father, David Nathaniel Wilkinson, fourth child of the third generation herein mentioned was born during the Civil War.
DAVID NATHANIEL WILKINSON and DORA FRANCISCO MIDDLETON
In 1863 [actually 1883] David Nathaniel Wilkinson married Dora Francisco Middleton. This couple settled on a farm near Pineapple, Alabama. In 1890 they moved to Sabine Parish, Louisiana near the town of Pleasant Hill, Louisiana. In 1910 they [David & second wife and family] moved to Nacogdoches County, Texas. David Nathaniel was a dirt farmer and a Deacon in the Missionary Baptist church. In 1899 at the age of thirty three, my mother, Dora, died from blood poisoning set in from miscarriage.
DAVID NATHANIEL WILKINSON and SADIE PHILLIPS:
In 1900 my father married Sadie Phillips of Sabine Parish, Louisiana. It is notable that my father was married to each wife a little more than sixteen years. During each marriage there were six children- three girls and three boys to each set. Of the twelve children to this date, 1953, all are living except one, Viola (feb.20,1890-1934). The eldest of the twelve children is now sixty nine: the baby girl, Dora, is 40 years old.
[end of records by Arthur F. Wilkinson]
There was another Asa Wilkinson in Butler Co, Alabama, grandson of Micaijah Wilkinson of Amite Co., MS. He married Rebecca Fleming, had a daughter named Tempy and a son named David. The widow, Rebecca Fleming Wilkinson married Dr Garrett. Her daughter Tempy married the son of Dr Garrett. Her son David was born in 1840; consequently, he is too young to be the husband of Elizabeth Dykes (married in 1855). Also there is substantial evidence that Asa married Sarah Grimes after Betsy's death. For both Asa and Rebecca to remarry, they would have to be divorced AND he was a Primitive Baptist Preacher. The Asa of Amite Co, Mississippi was the son of Asa, Sr. born in 1795 (well documented date), who would have been 10 when our Asa was born. Though a book, published in 1953, ties our Asa Wilkinson to the Amite County clan, I believe the evidence is overwhelmingly against such an assumption. I believe there were two Asa Wilkinsons living in Alabama in the middle 1800s.
Asa Wilkinson moved to Monroe Co, AL around 1852-53

He was a Deacon at Melrose Baptist Church.
David Nathaniel's daughter, Dora later told her daughter about it; though she was only 3 at the time, she remembered someone coming to the house to get her mother (Sadie) and they took a shortcut across a field and creek, he had been brought up to the house, (very close to where it happened) and was lying on the porch. According to her, the team of mules were very young and were inexperienced with a machine that rattled. The family had begged him not to do it because of the danger, but he would not listen
