Edward
JAKOBEIT was born 17 February 1847 in
Prussia. At the age of twenty-two, he
boarded the ship Erna departing from
Bremen, Germany; he landed at the Port of
Galveston Texas in December of 1869.
On 25
October 1871 Edward signed a Declaration
of Intent to become a U.S. citizen in
Clinton, De Witt County, Texas. Clinton
was located on the west bank of the
Guadalupe River five miles west of
present day Cuero.
Edward was
living in Bexar County as earl as 1870,
as evident by the 1870 Bexar County
Census.
It is
thought that Edward enlisted in the U.S.
Army from 1870-1875, (Enlistment: Edward
Jacoby) having enlisted at Lampassas and
serving at Ft. Mc Kavett (Menard County)
Occupation is listed as a druggist.
Edward
married Christiana SCHOBER 06 September
1873 in Bexar County, Texas.
Christiana
was born 24 November 1856 in Powder Horn,
Calhoun County, Texas to Johann Christian
Schober and Louise Christene Elenore
Kuester. She had two sisters, Emelia and
Scharlotta, a brother Albert, and a
half-sister Sophia.
Powder Horn
was a shipping point during the 1850's.
It was located on Powder Horn Bayou
(present day Keller Bay) and served as a
depot for Indianola; Powder Horn was also
known as Brown's Addition. It was also a
transshipment point for supplies to the
interior of the state, particularly San
Antonio. In 1853 the buildings at the
depot consisted of five structures for
supplies, a small blacksmith shop, and a
stable. These structures were built on
land leased by the United States
Government. A 250-foot wharf on which was
laid a railway was connected to the
government land. In 1856 there was a
semi-weekly line of steamers to
NewOrleans, and in 1857 Powder Horn was a
troop shipping point.
Sometime
after their marriage (tax records
indicate around 1881) they moved to
Winchester, Fayette County, Texas where
they made a living farming.
They were
the parents of eleven children: August,
Franz, Albert, Emma, Emil, Bettie, Anna,
Minna, Josephine, and William.
Edward and
Chrisitana attended St. Michael's
Lutheran Church in Winchester, where
almost all of their children were
baptized or confirmed, and where some of
them were married.
Edward died
on 07 February 1911 in Winchester. Church
records list his cause of death as a
brain tumor.
Christiana
died 30 November 1926 in Smithville,
Bastrop County, Texas at the home of her
daughter, Emma, and son -in -law, I.D.
Thomas.
Edward and
Christiana are both buried in the
Winchester Community Cemetery in
Winchester, Fayette County, Texas
