Cisco Semester 3 Threaded Case Study

Pro's and Con's

As you have seen through out this website we have created a network for the Mt Sky school that follows the given Requirements for the netwrok (Introduction).

Even though the network algins with the requirements, there are some negative attributes to the network, so a list of Pro's and Con's of the Mt Sky network has been created, as follows:

Pros

Cons

  • Gigabit switches ensures that all bandwidth requirements are met
  • There is extra security from external threats and from within the LAN with the use of firewalls and ACL’s on the routers
  • Only switches were used, no hubs, dedicated bandwidth to all hosts on the network
  • All the rooms in the school that have been selected have been outfitted with all equipment so that a computer room can easily be setup with out extra wiring done.
  • Extra equipment bought and stored means less down time if a network device malfunctions.
  • Firewall operating systems is open source therefore free.
  • Only Cat 6 cable used throughout the LAN:
    • Cheap implementation
    • Good speed/bandwidth (1000 Mbps)

o       Easy to administer and replace as needed

  • Cat 6 UTP is not physically secure as fibre optic cable is
  • There is a bottleneck at the firewalls as it is the only point of access between the LAN and district network
  • Switches will create latency on network.
  • Due to all the rooms been outfitted but not being used, there is a lot of equipment not in use as of yet.
  • Due to the purchase of extra equipment that shall not be used immediately the initial cost of the network was increased.
  • Software Firewall has some disadvantages:

o       It requires computer resources

o       Success is based on user intervention and monitoring

o       You must understand how to configure the software properly

o       It can be disabled by standard hacking techniques
