John Ryan

The moment I had anticipated was only steps away. As I stopped and knelt, that which I had sought was pinned upon me...The Ad Altare Dei Award. A moment transfixed in time that was made larger than life by Bishop John Cassata pinning an award on my uniform...

Ryan Continued       I was energized by this first significant recognition of my life. The accomplishment
of the Ad Altare Dei Award jump-started my scout career to new heights within a scout
unit that had a "can do" attitude. Our scouts dreams came true because our leadership
kept Baden Powell's vision in mind for our adventures. Well, now, as you read through
these pages (AAD Tour site), you'll find I'm in the business of making our scouts dreams
come true with an unprecedented adventure!

Shipman Continued ...New to the Catholic Committee on Scouting, but not new to
scouting, Ralph brings a wealth of scouting experience to our program. He is
a world traveler, leading two International Tours, several tours to National
Jamboree’s, and to the Philmont Scout Ranch. He has served on numerous
camp staffs including an International Camp.

During his tenure as the Commissioner to the Pack and Troop of Keflivik Iceland
(National Direct Service), Ralph was instrumental in bringing the Icelandic Scouting
Association and BSA together after a long separation due to political unrest. He
holds the Arrow of Light, God and Country, Scouter Training Award, Scouters Key,
Commissioners Key and a Silver Arrowhead Honor. Ralph is a true Gilwell Scout
having attended Wood Badge in 1978 at Gilwell Park, Chingford, England. He has
served Scouting for over fifteen years in various positions from Scoutmaster to
Commissioner and is presently serving as Assistant District Commissioner for the
Mustang District.

Myers Continued ...her son bridged into Scouting, where she served as a Committee Member. Since 1998, she has
been a great resource for marketing ideas, program ideas, and has been a tremendous help
each year when we try to inspire our scouts with a historical re-enactment.

Outside of Scouting, she has helped with the founding of Holy Rosary Catholic School in
South Arlington, was Director of Development for HRCS, and the school's Development Liaison
for the Diocese of Ft Worth. She served as a Pre-School, Elementary and Alternative Teacher
in Religious Education as well as the annual Vacation Bible School. She also served as a Sponsor
Couple for the marriage preparation program at SVDP for 13 years.

Currently she serves as Confirmation Teacher, 9th grade Religious Ed Teacher, and Adult
helper for SVDP Youth's BASIC and Bible Cafe. She also helps with the annual DCYC program
held each summer for youth and in general any youth related activity at St. Vincent De Paul
Catholic Church.

She is currently Executive Director of STAR.Children's Scholarship Fund in Ft Worth which
aids economically disadvantaged children in attaining a private elementary education.

We congratulate Patty and her 2004 Bronze Pelican Award for providing service to Catholic Scouting.

Corpany Continued
...the Meadowbrook Methodist Church. As a side note, Troop 512 and its sister troop, Troop 12 celebrated
their 80th anniversary in 2005! Between the years of 1965 and 1978 three Corpany boys were involved
in Scouting...two were Eagles and one was a Life Scout.

I joined Scouts in 1972 under the "old program". In 1973, the program was "urbanized" but I continued to
use the Achievement Scorecard until I was a Star Scout. Then my father insisted I had to complete the
"trail to Eagle" under the new program…yuck! After much coaching and encouragement on March 30, 1976 my
best friend and I received our Eagle Scout Awards in a double Eagle Court of Honor. God bless my Dad!
The Eagle Scout charge was delivered by none other than the one and only Frank "Captain" Kidd.
While I was a boy I had attended six (6) summer camp sessions alternating each year between LSR and WR
(my all time favorite camp). In 1974 I was "tapped out" into the Order of the Arrow. That's when the
fun really started. Over the next several years I learned most every ceremonial part in the Ordeal and
Brotherhood Ceremony. Held the office of Chapter Chief and Ceremonies Chairman two or maybe three
years in a row. It was in the OA where I had first hand experience on the workings of politics,
alliance building and negotiating voting blocks. These were life lessons that carry with me even today.
On August 30, 1979 I received the Vigil Honor and with it was bestowed the Vigil name of, "Excited Badger
Who Preservers."

I made two excursions to Philmont as camper and worked as a Philmont Ranger in 1980 and 1981…many
more life lessons and first time experiences came my way those two summers. Most notable, in summer
of 1980 I represented the Ranger Department in the Bull Riding Competition in the Cimarron 4th of July
Rodeo. I believe I may have made two whole seconds on the back of the Brahma bull. And, I perfected the
skill of "interpretive hiking"…ask me later about that one.

Fast forward to spring 2006…I find myself the father and Den Leader of a 7 year old Tiger Scout and up to
my eyeballs in Wood Badge. Busy times, but great times. My son's name Elliot John. He is in Pack 32…and
some day he WILL be a Boy Scout in Troop 32. Isn't it funny how life comes full circle for us.
I was my father's son and now I am my son's father. Look out world here we come! A whole new generation
of Scouting experiences, stories and life lessons will be coming my way...and I can hardly wait!
