Boy Scout Retreat
During 1961, John Edward "Ole Man" Gillespie and Bob Connelly, became co-founders of the Ft Worth
Deanery (later became diocese) Boy Scout Retreat. Bob, a recent transfer from Buffalo NY, combined
with CCS Chairman Gillespie to found the inaugural event. Retreat Chairman Bill Bellman will be
leading the 48th Annual Boy Scout Retreat during October 2008.
Philmont Cavalcade and CCS Pilgrimmage
CCS sponsored a religious pilgrimmage to sites in New Mexico for a group of older scouts after having completed
a Philmont Cavalcade. This pilgrimmage laid the foundation for the 2007 Ad Altare Dei Tour.
Inaugural Catholic Cub Scout Retreat
Jay Krail, a recent transfer from the Archidiocese of Los Angeles, co-founded the Catholic Cub Scout
Retreat (CCSR) during 1998 with CCSR Chairman John Ryan. Jay Krail designed the program to cover the
seven sacraments within a 5 year cycle of retreats that would reflect a Tiger to Webelos II journey. The
"base" of the patch design reflects the seat of the diocese, St Patrick's Cathedral. The 5 years of
retreat patches may be posted around the St Patrick's Cathedral so a Cub Scout can enter the cycle at any
time and still complete the 7 patch cross. Cub Scout Retreat Chairman Tina Jezek will be
leading the 11th Annual Cub Scout Retreat during October 2008.
Our Lady of Guadelupe
During the late 1990's, CCS Ft Worth instituted this program based on a similar program conducted by the
Diocese of Los Angeles.
2007 Ad Altare Dei Tour
Bishop Vann accepted the plan and bestowed John Ryan with a Diocesan Appointment to lead the effort. Diocesan
Chaplain Fr Anh Tran traveled with Seminarian Keith Hathaway (former Scout) and 61 scouts and Scouters to
Amarillo, Santa Fe (NM) and Philmont Scout Ranch. Scouts met Bishop Yanta in Amarillo, visited the
"miraculous staircase" of Loretto's Chapel, San Miguel Mission and witnessed the collection of crutches
left by cured pilgrims at the Church in Chimayo. They toured indian cliff dwellings at Bandolier National
Monument, attended an indian dance pow-wow, and conducted a "Living Rosary" for the 2007 NCCS Conference at
Philmont Training Center.
