One of our nation's most magnificent natural attractions, Palo
Duro Canyon is visited by over half a million people from all over
the world each year.
Created by wind and water erosion from the Prairie Dog Town Fork
of the Red River, the canyon creates a colorful canyon unlike any
other. Approximately 800 feet deep and 110 miles long, the exposed
layers show off about 200 million years of geological time.
History
Home for pre-historic Indians nearly 12,000 years ago.
Coronado may have visited the canyon in 1541.
Captain R.B. Marcy officially discovered the canyon in 1852.
The canyon was the scene of a decisive battle in 1874 between Comanche
and Kiowa Indians and the U.S. Army troops under General Ranald
Mackenzie.
It was also the scene of an early ranch started by Charles Goodnight
in 1876.
The land was donated by private owners in 1933 and was opened to
the public in 1934.
Attractions
Paul Green's "TEXAS", the nation's most popular outdoor
drama, is performed evenings, during the summer months in an open-air
theater nestled at the bottom of a 600' canyon wall.
