Robert McDonald Wilson

Robert was born to Robert Wilson and Jane Anderson in
Hobart on the 27th of March 1856.
He was only 2 months old when his father died.

On the 27th of April 1857 his mother Jane married John Gindes.

Not a great deal is known about his early life except that he was raised by his mother and step father along with four other step brothers in the Gindes family, including twins.

His marriage to Jane Salter (daughter of George Salter and Martha Ford Higgins) lasted until she died on 22 May 1884. She was buried at
St. Mary's Anglican Church (commonly called the "Woolpack" church)
at Gretna, TAS, on 25 May, 1884.

He married Louisa Clara Ransley (daughter of John Ransley and Mary Mayne Salter) on 8 sep. 1885 at the quaint St Augustine's Church at Macquarie Plains, TAS.

This marriage produced 11 children to add to the three children from Robert's first marriage which must have been a handful to raise and care for - but they did it.

Of the 14 children all but one survived to marry and produce families of their own.  The only casualty was Clara Wilson who was born in 1902 and died in 1908 aged 6 when her night dress caught on fire while standing too close to an open fire.  She rushed outside into the night in terror was chased and the flames were put out but to no avail, she died of her burns.  She is buried in a small grave at Red Hill, Bushy Park near her parents and the rest of the Wilson clan.

Robert McDonald Wilson was a huge assuming man with a heart of gold.  He was a Shepherd by trade and worked for the Shoobridge family at Bushy Park.  He was a Scotsman through and through and used to wear the tartan kilt and play the bagpipes.   He was an excellant horseman and could use a stockwhip very well.

He told my father his middle name McDonald was given to him because he was part of the McDonald clan in Scotland but at this stage I have no evidence that the McDonalds married into the Wilson line.

The Wilson's are a clan of their own but they are also a sept of Clan Gunn who descend from the Earls of Orkney.
