Deity Sprite Portraits



I screen captured, and edited, all of these sprite portraits from the 1993 Super Famicom version of the Populous II real time strategy video game, which was ported/revamped by the developer Infinity (in addition to the new artwork, it's much shorter, with only 48 levels, compared to the 900+ found in the original PC game.) Toshiaki Katou was the main illustrator/character designer for this incarnation of Bullfrog's masterpiece--his style, while unique, reminds me of the work of Yoshitaka Amano (Final Fantasy). The sixteen gods and goddesses are listed in alphabetical order and the sprites have been enlarged for easier viewing. The text descriptions for each deity are reproduced, word-for-word, from the game. All copyrighted images and terminology seen on this web page belongs to Bullfrog, not to me. Aphrodite

The goddess of love and beauty. Even the gods cannot withstand her extraordinary beauty. The guardian goddess of Cypros.

Apollo

The god of the sun and art. A son of Zeus. A beautiful god who is skilled with the lyre. The guardian god of the Palace of the Sun.

Ares

The god of warfare. A cruel and ruthless god that is fond of battle. The guardian god of Delos.

Artemis

The goddess of the moon and hunting, and a twin sister of Apollo. The guardian goddess of the Palace of the Moon.

Athena

The goddess of wisdom and war and a daughter of Zeus. A beautiful goddess with a violent temper. The guardian goddess of Athenai.

Demeter

The goddess of grain. A wise and beautiful goddess who rules plants. The guardian goddess of Thrace.

Dionysus

The god of grapes. He is fond of festivals and merry-making. The guardian god of Mycenae.

Gaia

The mother goddess of the Earth. Great Mother of all the gods that rule the earth. The guardian goddess of Olympus Mountain.

Hades

The king of Hades. A brother of Zeus and one of the strongest gods. The guardian god of the Palace of the Underworld.

Hephaestus

The god of fire and smithery. The ugliest god. A very good smith who made houses and weapons for the gods. The guardian god of Larissa.

Hera

The queen of the heavens. A wife of Zeus. She is very jealous. The guardian goddess of the Palace of the Heavens.

Hermes

The messenger of the gods. He wears a pair of sandals with wings and runs like the wind. The guardian god of Crete.

Poseidon

The king of the sea. A brother of Zeus, and one of the strongest gods. The guardian god of the Palace of the Sea.

Prometheus

The god who gave humans fire and other inventions. The guardian god of Argus.

Styx

The cold-hearted goddess of the Underworld. The guardian of Cypros.

Zeus

The king of the gods. The supreme god with absolute power in Olympus.

Long ago in the age of myths, when humans lived as one with the gods...

Zeus - the almighty ruler of Olympus - bore a son by a mortal woman.

As time passed, the boy grew to become a brave and handsome youth.

One day the youth decided to visit his father in Olympus.

However, that was to become a greater task than he had expected...
