Inuyasha is, obviously, the leading male character in the series. He
had
been sealed to a tree by the priestess, Kikyo, 50 years ago. He met
Kagome
when she unsealed him from the tree, and then joined her on a journey
to
gather the Shikon Jewel shards after Kagome accidentally shattered the
jewel.
50 years ago, he and Kikyo were in love until they were deceived by
Naraku,
who was in love with Kikyo himself. Naraku badly injured Kikyo
disguised as
Inuyasha, and attacked Inuyasha while disguised as Kikyo. Thinking
Kikyo
betrayed him, he went to steal the Shikon jewel, which was in Kikyo's
care.
As he escaped with it, the real Kikyo shot her arrow at him and sealed
him
to a tree, and died soon after. The jewel was burned along with her
body and
turned up later with Kagome.
Inuyasha has a tough exterior, and is incredibly arrogant, but he has a
soft
side. He still has not forgotten about Kikyo, and wants to avenge her
by
defeating Naraku. He does, however, clearly have feelings for Kagome
and
risks his life to keep her safe in many instances.
