Reason #20 to come to Penguin Winter Carnival 2005
Mood:  on fire
Reason #20 to come to Penguin Winter Carnival, Tampa, Florida, February 4-6, 2005:
THE WORLD'S LONGEST CONTINUOUS SIDEWALK

Tampa claims the distinction of having the World's Longest Continuous Sidewalk, seven miles in length along Bayshore Boulevard. This linear park has some of the most scenic views in urban Tampa, looking out directly on Tampa Bay. A favorite with joggers, walkers, skaters and bikers, it is the city's center for fitness fans and was cited by AAA as one of Florida's "Top Roads."

Why is this important to Penguin Winter Carnival Participants?

From about Mile 22 to the finish, the Hops Marathon By The Bay will run along this route on Sunday, February 6, 2005. The marathon finish line is open for seven full hours. At noon (six hours after the start), those remaining on the marathon course will be asked to use the Bayshore Boulevard sidewalk. In some cities, "moving to the sidewalk" means fighting traffic at multiple intersections. However, in Tampa, due to the generous nature of this continuous scenic route, moving to the sidewalk should present no special hardship to slower marathon finishers - instead, it provides a closer view over Tampa Bay along with a bay breeze for the last few miles of your race. In 2003, times were reported for marathon finishers at times up to 7:57; In 2004, times were reported for marathon finishers at times up to 9:11.

What does this mean for you?

This is a GREAT VENUE for tackling your FIRST MARATHON, surrounded by cheering and supportive penguins on a beautiful course with a generous finishing time! If you're an experienced back-of-the-packer, it's also a GREAT opportunity to tackle your tenth marathon on a flat course with low time pressure, enjoying the Florida sunshine with the fellowship of other penguins! Plus if you start preparing now, you have over NINE FULL MONTHS to train!
