IRELAND
Interesting facts about Ireland
- There is a magic about the rolling well-tilled landscape of West Cork, where the stone circle at Drombeg may well have been a prehistoric center for the cult of the sun that benignly shines upon it. Ecxavations in the seventeen-stone circle revealed the cremated bones of a youth as its center which may date from shortly before the time of Christ, though the circle itself may be hundreds if not thousands of years old.
- No self-respecting Irish monastary was without its Round Tower as a kind of status symbol, and it served as such. The towers, built between 950 and 1200, were tapering towers with their conical tops are best likened to a pared pencil standing on its flattened end.
- It was the Irish themsevles who built the first castles in the country, particularly the O'Connor king of Connacht who wanted to boost their power and protect themselves against their fellow Irishmen.
