This is a rather whimsically designed house / cottage in a buccolic setting just nine miles from Chapel Hill. The one acre lot: is completely wooded with a mature forest, has a big old pond (called Chesterfield Lake), two rain-water creeks. |
The adjacent properties are also completely wooded so I am surrounded by forest. An amenity? - of an old privy is on the side of the lot.
The house was custom-built from the remnants of the Chesterfield Tobacco recreational property. My house was built around the remaining chimney of the old barbeque pit. The house is in three levels. The exterior is raw cedar siding. Inside most of the floors are laid with wide maple-planks. The living-room is in pine and cypress. The house has two working iron stoves; a Ben Franklin stove in the master bedroom and a big Buck-eye stove in the living room. Much of the inside siding, doors and fixtures and cabinets were made from wood and iron salvaged from the old properties. A great part of the whimsical design of the house comes from the odd shaped windows that border the roof lines.
