Schlatter wins Beast of the East crown
NEWARK, Del. — Perry High School senior Dustin Schlatter won the 145-pound division at the Mid-Atlantic Beast of the East Tournament, wrapping up two days of wrestling Sunday with five straight victories.
Sophomore Thomas Straughn was fourth at 140 pounds as the Panthers took sixth place out of 81 teams at what is considered the top high school wrestling tournament in the nation.
“The whole team wrestled really well and got a lot of bonus points for us,” Perry head coach Brian Dolph said. Perry scored 124.5 points to finish second among Ohio schools. St. Paris Graham was third with 166.5. Blair Academy of New Jersey won the event with 213.5 points. Lakewood St. Edward was ninth with 111.5, and Walsh Jesuit was 15th with 93.
“Beating St. Ed’s is something we were gunning for. Now, we want to beat them at the state tournament,” said Dolph, whose team has finished second at state behind St. Edward the past two seasons. “It gives us some light at the end of the tunnel.”
