Ohio wrestler against Schlatter since Johnstone’s win two years ago.
“He got the escape and then went right back in right away and spun behind,” Lake coach Mike Mattingly said. “He stretched out on the edge and got his two. He kept his toes in.”
Schlatter, who had to take multiple breaks due to a cut during the match, struggled throughout the final minute to escape from Miller’s grasp. However, he was able to even things up with less than 30 seconds left when Miller was hit with his second stalling call, which gave Schlatter the tying point.
In the first overtime, Schlatter nearly had Miller taken down at the edge of the mat with under 20 seconds remaining. However, a stalemate was called before the Panther senior was awarded what would have been the winning two points.
Schlatter chose the top position in the second overtime, and only needed to keep Miller from breaking free for half a minute. He was grasping with all of his might as the clock wound down, but Miller was able to roll over and then kick his way free for the win, which sent the Lake contingent into a frenzy.
“I was practicing my butt off for this match,” Miller said. “I wasn’t going to let him beat me.”
As for the first 13 matches, Perry managed pins from Greg Busby (171) and Devyn Hoffner (215) sandwiched around a victory by Dustin Shilling (189) for a 15-0 lead. After Lake recorded its first win of the evening at heavyweight in overtime, consecutive pins by Danny Genetin (103), Scott Rooney (112) and Chris Hartley (119) put things out of reach at 33-3.
Perry also got wins from Brent Charton (130), Zach Mizer (a pin at 135), Zach Messer (140), Thomas Straughn (145) and Cory Nelson (a technical fall at 152).
“I thought we wrestled really well,” said Dolph, whose team wrestles visiting GlenOak next Thursday. “Everybody went out ready top fight. Everybody performed well and didn’t make mistakes.”
