The Panthers sophomore bounced back with a vengeance, pinning Lakewood St. Edward’s Mike Janik at 2:45 in the fifth-place match. Kapper had the misfortune of running into two juggernauts in University School’s Adam Kriwinsky in the semifinals Friday night and Walsh Jesuit’s Quentin Keyes in the fifth-place match Saturday. Kriwinsky decisioned the Indians junior 7-2 in Friday’s semis and Keyes earned a 6-1 decision in the fight for third place as Kapper went 3-2 in the tournament to go 31-10 on the season. “He faced the defending state champion (Kriwinsky) and defending state runner-up (Keyes),” said Northwest assistant coach Dave Tolarchyk. “That says a lot. He just came up a couple points short each match.” The Falcons’ Bowers came up just shy in his bid to win a state title. The projected state winner, Bowers recovered from a semifinal pin to post a first-period pin over Wellston’s Lance Phillips in the consolation semifinals. Bowers, a senior, then lost his last high school match by pin to Northmor’s Matt Stuff to end the season 21-3. Tuslaw senior A.J. Hall closed on a high note. He beat projected state champ Andrew Gardella of Chanel 2-0 for fifth place. Hall got the only takedown to win his third consolation match of the tournament and conclude the season 35-9. Lake senior Smith dropped a heartbreaking 4-3 decision in his match for fifth. After winning three straight in the consolation rounds, Smith lost his last two to go 3-3 at state and finish 34-12. Walker, an Aviator sophomore, had a strong first showing at state. His takedown of Perkins’ Dustin Smith in overtime gave him a 3-1 win and fifth place. Walker won four times in his tourney debut to finish 39-6.
Carrollton’s Tony Mizer finished fourth at 160 pounds in Division II after dropping a 3-1 decision to Rocky River’s Mike Milano in the third-place match. Also in Division II, two Dover wrestlers drew two Pemberville Eastwood wrestlers in seventh-place matches. Dover’s Zach Kimble won by default over Eric Cubberly at 135 pounds to take seventh while the Tornadoes’ Shaun Yackerly fell 7-1 to Kurt Schroyer at 130 pounds. West Branch’s Andy Lamancusa placed third at 140 pounds while teammate Eric Morrow was sxith at 119 pounds.
