Auditioning for Musical Theatre
Class level:  beginning
Length:  20-30 minutes
Objectives:
    Students will:
         - discuss the interactive elements of the audition preparation.
         - create outlines for the development of audition portfolios.
         - develop an understanding of the process of Musical Theatre
           auditions.
Materials:
     Examples of music portfolios
     Video and audio taped audition examples
      Theatrical resumes
Anticipatory Set:
     It has been stated in many articles on auditioning that most Directors/Producers will decide if someone auditioning has the necessary qualities within the first 30 seconds.  The process of auditioning can range from excruciatingly humiliating to ecstatic jubilation based on one element--PREPARATION!  The 30 second countdown is to familiarize those auditioning with the element of time and the short interval we have to exude talent and personality.
Activities:
    1.  The instructor will lead the class on discussion of the interactive elements of preparation for an audition.  The key word emphasized is Preparation.
    2.  The student will be issued a handout to organize the characteristics of a strong and efficient audition portfolio.  The handout is completed by groups and students will be encouraged to actively think about specific material used in auditions.  The purpose is for the student to develop material that can be considered as marketable, material the student can use to promote and showcase talent.
    3.  The purpose of this segment is to familiarize students with a variety of different types of Musical Theatre auditions and the subsequent expectations.  This includes discussion on the preparation, practice, and evaluation of the audition.  Through demonstrations of what to do and what not to do, students are offered the opportunity to cultivate a polished/professional
persona.
