The Amityville Horror: The Film

original poster

In 1979, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer pictures released The Amityville Horror, based on the best selling book and story about the Lutz family's 28 days of horror spent in the residence of 112 Ocean Avenue, starring James Brolin, Margot Kidder, and Rod Stieger. The film was a big success and made over $7 million dollars on it's opening weekend across the US.

Interesting Facts:

::: The outdoor scenes of the movie were not filmed in Amityville, Long Island, but rather Toms River, New Jersey. Local police and ambulance workers played extras.

::: The Toms River, New Jersey volunteer Fire Company Number One was used to provide the "rain" during one of the exterior scenes. If you look closely, you can see that it is sunny and not "raining" in the background, the next street over.

::: The Amityville Horror was released in theaters across the US on July 27th, 1979.

::: Some taglines for the film include "For God's Sake Get Out!" and "The best selling novel about a haunted house... has become real!".
