Descendants of Billy and Kitty (Gibson) Brown

Billy and Kitty Brown had twelve children between 1860 and 1884:
1) Humphrey Alexander Brown (1860-1933).
2) John "Johnie" William Brown (b.1862). He married Jesse Dunn and is buried in Marietta, Georgia.
3) Jane Elizabeth "Lizzie" Brown (1864-1935).
4) James "Jim" Franklin Brown (1866- 1927). He married Mary Ophelia Langford and is buried at Sandy Level Baptist Church in Blythewood.
5) Joseph "Joe" Nathanael Brown (b. 1868).
6) Peter Harris Claudius Brown (1870-1885). He is buried at Sandy Level Baptist churchyard, Blythewood.
7) Margaret "Maggie" Delaney Brown (1873- 1880). She is buried at Sandy Level Baptist churchyard, Blythewood.
8) Ruthanna Keturah "Kitty" Brown (1875- 1885). She is buried at Sandy Level churchyard, Blythewood.
9) Cardine Lenora "Carrie" Brown (1877- 1957).
10) Emma Fostina Brown (1879- 1930).
11) Brooks Samuel Brown (1882-1930).
12) Lillie Dora Brown (1884-1884), buried at Sandy Level Baptist Church, Blythewood, S.C.

First Child: Humphrey Alexander Brown (1860-1933)

Humphrey Brown Humphrey Alexander Brown (b. 1860), first children of Billy and Kitty Brown. He married Emma L. Wooten in 1885. They had nine children. He was the postmaster in Blythewood. He is buried at Sandy Level Baptist Church, Blythewood. (br-6)
Emma Wooten Brown Emma Lottie (Wooten) Brown. She was the spouse of Humphrey Alexander Brown, whom she married in 1885. Around her are five of her nine children. more Humphrey Brown This is Humphrey Alexander Brown's wife on the right, Emma Lottie (Wooten) Brown. On the left is Humphrey's oldest child, Emma Laurie Brown (1901-1991). She married George Hine, with whom she had four children. Later Emma Laurie married Barnes Alston Boyle. The children of Emma Laurie and George Hine are: (br-7)
1) George Henry Hine (1919-1936),
2) David Humphrey Hine (b. 1921), who married Mary Frances Edwards.
3) Frank Brown Hine (b. 1925), who married first, Ruth and then Margared Adden. Frank has a son Frank, Jr. by his first wife and another son, George by his second wife.
4) Oliver Hugh Hine (b. 1926), who married Mary.
David and Hugh Hine These are two of Humphrey Brown's grandchildren: David Hine and Hugh Hine. Their parents are Emma Laurie (Brown) and George Hine. (br-8)

Second Child: John "Johnie" William Brown (b.1862)

The picture below is of John William Brown (b. 1862), who was the second child of Billy and Kitty Brown. He married Jesse Dunn and had three children, Kitty Brown, Jessie Mae and a son. He was a "mercantilist" in Marietta, Georgia. That is, he had a store. The picture is from a March 1937 newspaper clipping. The caption on the clipping reads: (br-9)
John William Brown John W. (“Yellow Jacket”) Brown (b. 1862), resident of Canton Road, is 75 years old today. The Times roving cameraman found him preparing to plant peach trees in front of his home to celebrate the day. Native of Fairfield county, S.C., Mr. Brown has been a Cobb countian for 51 years. He once operated a large store in Marietta, but is now retired. He has a son and two daughters living. Active and spry, his principal interests are his home place, politics and a young grandson.

Third Child: Jane Elizabeth "Lizzie" Brown (1864-1935)

Jane Elizabeth Brown Hogan Elizabeth "Lizzie" Jane Brown Hogan (1864-1935). She was the third of twelve children of Billy and Kitty Brown. She married Eugene Belton Hogan (1856-1922) on January 19, 1881. They belonged to the Baptist church and had six children between 1882 and 1891. After Eugene died, Elizabeth married Arthur Peter Mills in 1925. He died in 1932 and is buried at Louisville, Kentucky. Elizabeth is buried in Maxton, North Carolina, where her daughter, Lillie Hogan Tucker cared for her in her last years. (br-11)

Fifth Child: Joseph "Joe" Nathanael Brown (b. 1868)

The picture below is of Joseph "Joe" Nathaniel Brown (b. 1868) and his family about 1933. Joe was the fifth child of Billy and Kitty Brown. Joe married Kitty Bruce Hogan. They had ten children, nine of whom are pictured here. Joe was in the livery stable business with his cousin, Will Boyle. Joe is buried at Blythewood. Also in the picture are three grandchildren. br-3

  • Bottom row William R. "Buster" Brown, who became the state treasurer for South Carolina, Audrey Elizabeth McClary (daughter of Ruth and Henry), John "Jack" Calvin Brown, and Joe Belton Brown (b. 1918).

  • Nat Brown's children This is Audrey Elizabeth (McClary) Mitchell (1921-2010). She was born at Kingstree, SC, the second child of Ruth (Brown) McClary (b. 1896) and Henry Ervin McClary (1896-1950). Ruth, the oldest child of Joseph Nathaniel Brown, died young. As a result, Audrey’s Aunt Nell Brown Bannerman stepped in and helped raise her. Audrey grew up in Greeleyville, Charleston, Blythewood Toogoodoo and Columbia, SC. She graduated from Columbia High School in 1939 and took courses at Columbia College, SC and Northwestern University in Illinois. She worked as a secretary at Shaw Air Force until 1954 when she married John Andrew Mitchell. She was a Methodist with her favorite hymn being “Forth in Thy Name, Oh Lord.” She had breast cancer twice, surviving it at age 72. She had a sense of humor and was not easily rattled. She liked reading, movies, gardening and cats. She and husband John are buried at Beaufort National Cemetery in Greeleyville.
    Audrey and John Mitchell had four children:
    1) Felicia Mitchell. She is a poet and a professor of English at Emory and Henry College, which was founded by the Methodists at Emory, Virginia in 1836. Poetry, art and music have always been part of the Brown family heritage. Felicia’s publications embody this tradition and include autobiographical reflections about Brown descendents.     Tenth Child: Emma Fostina Brown (1879- 1930)

    Below is a picture of Billy and Kitty Brown's tenth child, Emma Fostina Brown (1879-1930) and her family taken in front of their house. They are said to have had the first car in Blythewood, which is pictured. In 1897 Emma had married Michael Langford (1867-1930), who was a medical doctor and a 1893 graduate of Vanderbilt. Emma is buried at the Lutheran cemetery in Blythewood.
    Carrie Langford Left to right: Emma's father-in-law, George Yarborough Langford, who had a sawmill, Emma's three oldest daughters's Esther (b. 1906), Margret (1908-1969) and Hannah L.(b. 1903). Lastly there is Dr. Mike Langford and Emma. Emma's two youngest children Rosa Faustina (b. 1912) and Rachael Michaeline (1920) were born after this picture was taken.     Eleventh Child: Brooks Samuel Brown (1882-1930)

    Brooks Brown children These are the children of Brooks Samuel Brown (1882-1930), the eleventh child of Billy and Kitty Brown. Brooks is buried at Green Lawn cemetery, Columbia, S.C.
