TieDown Test

I tested the tiedowns because I thought it might be interesting and wanted to share the results.

Since I will be using a lot of grass strips, I've been thinking of what kind of tiedowns I would need.

At first I thought I would use the old tried and true "screw down dog holders", but then I saw the nail and pipe design on the Zenith list.

I decided to build and test one.  I built one of the pipe and nail design and then one of my own design.

I tested each one with my cherry picker using a hanging scale in the same ground, just inches apart.  The ground was fairly moist.  The test pull weights would have been higher in harder ground.

This is the pipe type.

This is my design, open and folded.

 Here's the testing station.

The pipe type tested to 144 lbs, pulled out of the ground at approximately 150 lbs.

My design tested to 252 lbs and pulled out of the ground at approximately 280 lbs.

Notice the pipe laying behind mine, that's where I tested it.  I didn't have a "screw type dog holder" to test.

The materials used are the 12" nails, available at Lowe's at $.98 each and aluminum tubing, nuts and bolts I had around.  The tubing I used was too thin walled, it almost tore out.  When I build my real ones, I will use better material.   The aluminum holder is left over 6063-T5 bar stock from Lowe's.  Nut and bolt are 1/4" AN.
