LM701 STOL N1345L
"X" Braces
The vertical "L" angle inside the Zenith fuselage are approximately 30" apart. The large area between is only out of 16 gauge aluminum. This allows for a considerable about of tin-canning (flexing in and out). Not only does this effect the aerodynamics of the aircraft it also is quite noisy. In my opinion, this is a poor design whose only purpose is the lighten the aircraft. Which is negligible.
In order to overcome this I installed "X" braces between the larger expanses. I use 1/2" X 1/2" 6065 T5 aluminum angle I purchased at Lowe's. I riveted the ends to the longerons and secured the rest to the inside of the fuselage skin with automotive double sided tape, 3M brand, made for securing trim on the sides of cars.
It is extremely important that the surfaces be very clean. I used acid wash, but you can use denatured alcohol or acetone as well.
The "tin canning" problem is solved with very little added weight. Here are some pictures of the finished product.
