Mary Arden Crankfield was the second child of Jonathan Crankfield and Sara Emily Little (Crankfield) . She was probably born in South Carolina. According to Crankfield family historian, Virginia Bowen, she was called Arden because her grandmother, Lucy Wilson Crankfield, was in love with someone named Arden, but married Littleton. Shortly after Mary Arden was born, her family moved in 1836 to Alabama.
