Hannah Tyrer (1825-1900) and
Her Descendants
Hannah Tyrer was the second child of Edward Tyrer (1794-1855) and Ellen Tyrer. She was born in 1825 and in 1848 probably married a mariner named Bothms or Burton. In the 1851 census she was listed as a mariner’s wife, with the last name of Borthoms. She may have had another husband named Richard Jones. Her mother, Ellen Tyrer, was living with her in the 1861 census. The mother is listed as a pauper widow. In 1868 Hannah is listed as a domestic servant. Hannah died at Amlwch and is buried at the Amlwch Cemetery.
Hannah Tyrer may have had five children, all born at Amlwch and all listed below. But there is confusion in our records about two of these children, William Tyrer and Richard Tyrer. In the case of William Tyrer, it appears that both Hannah and her younger brother, Hugh, had sons whom they named William Tyrer. The dates for Hannah’s William were 1857-1937. The dates for Hugh’s William were 1859-1902. The birth certificate lists no father for Hannah’s son. That is the reason he was given the surname (Tyrer) of his mother. The confusion in our records concerning these two William Tyrers is that both are listed as married to Jane Roberts and as having the same nine children, including Margaret Ann Tyrer (Fisk).
The case of the other child, Richard Tyrer (1863-1908), is slightly less confusing. There appears to have been only one person with this name. The problem is, was he the son of Hannah or of Hugh? Until the confusion is cleared up, we will double-list William and Richard Tyrer and their descendants under both Hugh and Hannah. Read both entries, because some information is given in one that is not repeated in the other.
1) Edward Burton (b. 1849) was the first child of Hannah Tyrer. We do not have the name of his wife. He had three children. Olwen Tyrer states that Edward and his daughter Margaret Ann kept horses and a coaches to transport passengers and pilots from Amlwch to Hollyhead. They were also coal merchants and lived at a house called “Craig y Don”. The three children of Edward Burton were
1) Edward Burton was the first child of Edward Burton. Olwen Tyrer stated that he walked in his sleep and because of this was lost at sea on the way to the United States. He walked overboard.
2) Margaret Ann Burton (1872-1945) was the second child of Edward Burton. She married first, John Edward Roberts and then William Evans. One of Margaret Ann’s children, Edward Tyrer Roberts, stated that his father, who was John Edward Roberts, worked on the SS Cansett. This was one of the biggest steamers of the White Star Company. It sunk off Newfoundland. Margaret Ann Burton had nine children between 1892 and 1922, all born at Amlwch. They were:
1) Hannah Burton Roberts (1892-1961) was the first child of Margaret Ann Burton. She married Richard Parry.
2) Annie Burton Roberts (1895-1930) was the second child of Margaret Ann Burton. She married David Wynne in 1924.
3) Violet Roberts (1899-1967). She married Harry Hughes in 1936.
4) Elizabeth Nathiwen Roberts (b. 1901) married Robert Painter Hughes in 1928.
5) Sarah Jane Roberts (1903-1915).
6) Edward Tyrer Roberts (1905-1987) was the sixth child of Margaret Ann Burton. He was brought up as a member of St. Peter’s Church, Amlwch. But beginning in his teenage days he attended Carmel Chapel. During World War I he was a gunner with an Anty Air heavy guns. He was badly wounded twice in the war. After the war he worked as a caretaker at a big school. Later he made his living as a seaman. During the 1930s while a member of the crew of the schooner Kate of Amlwch, he met a relative named William Tyrer. This William Tyrer was a crew member of the barque named Hilda, when both ships were in harbor at Falmouth. Other ships upon which Edward sailed included the Kate of Peel, which was a two-masted schooner owned by William Thomas of Amlwch. Its master was Gilbert of St. Austel, Cornwall. He also sailed on the Winifred of Inverness, which was a three-hundred ton, three-masted barkentine owned by William Thomas of Amlwch. Its captain was William Williams of Lady Neave.

Edward Tyrer Roberts and his wife are pictured to the left. The photo was taken in the early 1970s when Ed Terrar (1920-2004) was visiting Amlwch. In the 1970s Edward was living at Bryn Eglwys, 24 Bryn Gwynt Street, Amlwch. He had thrombosis heart disease, which resulted in the shaking of his legs.
|
Edward married first Margaret Alice. They had no children, but adopted two. Then in 1952, he married Amy. She was crippled. They had one daughter, Margaret Ann Roberts (b. 1953)who is pictured below, third from the left, with her family.
|
Margaret Ann Roberts married Michael Jones, who is on the left in the picture. She and Michael have two sons, they are David Jones, who is second from the left and Christopher Jones (b. 1976), who is on the right. In the 1970s Margaret Ann was working at an insurance office at Colwyn Bay. She was planning on visiting Florida in 1989. In 2003 Michael and Margaret Ann were living in a house that they built themselves. It is at Cartre, Penysarn, Gwenedd LL69 9YR, Wales. The picture was taken by their cousin, Edward Terrar (1920-2004), on August 6, 1992, when he was visiting Wales along with his grandson, Antoine Terrar.

7) Lilian Roberts (b. 1906) was the seventh child of Margaret Ann Burton. She married Owen Roberts in 1928.
8) Roberts b. (b.1906), a male, died at birth.
9) Thomas Richard Roberts (b. 1922) was the eighth child of Margaret Ann Burton.
3) Thomas Burton (b. 1889) was the third child of Edward Burton. He had a grandson named Dick Tyrer, who was living in Holyhead in 1968.
2) Ann Tyrer (b. 1852) was the second child of Hannah Tyrer. She married a man named Richards. She lived in Chester. According to Olwen Tyrer, Hannah had two children, including a daughter named Ann. Both children were deaf and dumb. She also adopted a daughter named Ann, who died in her 20s and is buried at St. Eleth Church.
3) William Tyrer (1856-1937) was the third child of Hannah Tyrer. But see the discussion above. There is confusion in our records because Hannah's younger brother, Hugh, also had a son of the same name and approximate age. Both Williams in our records are listed as having married the same women and as having the same children, which is not possible.
The birth certificate at Llangefini for Hannah's William does not give a father. William went to work at age eight in Parys Mine and stayed there until it was closed. From 1880 to 1895 he was a smelterer and laborer at a chemical works in Amlwch Port until it closed. Then he went south Wales to work in the pits, either at Aberdare or Taylorstown. But later he returned to Amlwch and had a job with the Anglesey County Council until he retired. William Tyrer married Jane Roberts (1856-1937). In 1937 they were living at 32 Wesley St. They had ten children, all of whom except for the last, were born on Welsey St. in Amlwch. They are listed below, next to the picture of the ninth child, Margaret Ann Tyrer Fisk:
|
1) Robert Tyrer (1876-1879).
2) William Tyrer (1878-1964). He was brought up with Richard Tyrer of London. He never married. He worked at the same smeltering works as his father in Amlwch. When the works were closed, he went to sea until his retirement.
3) Robert Tyrer (b. 1880).
4) Hannah Tyrer (b. 1882).
5) Ellen Jane Tyrer (1886-1887).
6) Evan Tyrer (b. 1888).
7) Robert Tyrer (1891-1920). He was brought up with Richard Tyrer of London. He never married. He worked as a guard on the railroad and was living at 32 Wesley St. in 1920.

8) Richard Tyrer (1893-1893).
9) Margaret Ann Tyrer (b. 1895) was born at 47 Wesley St. Her picture was taken by Ed Terrar (1920-2004) in the early 1970s during his visit to Amlwch. It is the picture on the top left. Margaret married William Fisk. In the 1970s she was living at 47 Wesley St., Amlwch.
10) Olwen Tyrer (b. 1919) was born at Llanddyfnan. Her picture was taken by Ed Terrar (1920-2004) in the early 1970s during his visit to Amlwch. It is the left. Olwen was adopted in 1922 when Robert Tyrer, their blood son, died. Olwen never married. In the 1970s she was living at Park Mount, Glanhwfa Rd., Llangefni, Anglesey. She was a good historian and knew much about the family history.

4) Robert Tyrer (1860-1868) was the fourth child of Hannah Tyrer. The 1861 census lists him as Robert Peters. His death certificate lists him as Robert Tyrer.
5) Richard Tyrer (1863-1908) was the fifth child of Hannah Tyrer. But there is confusion about this. His marriage certificate states that his father was Richard Jones (deceased), a joiner. Nevertheless, he went by the name Tyrer. He may have been the son of Hugh Tyrer (1832-1890), a younger brother of Hannah Tyrer. But we have no proof of it. Until the confusion is cleared up, we list him both here as Hannah Tyrer’s son and we list him under Hugh Tyrer. Richard was listed as a “sailor” in 1885, a “mariner” in 1889, a “master mariner” in 1894 and a “mariner merchant marine” in 1897-1899. He was a captain of theMary Catherine, then the Hod-Barrow-Miner, both master schooners of the 300-ton class. He sailed chiefly from northwest England to the southern seaports. He was drowned in a shipwreck. Alan Tyrer says the name of the ship he was lost on was the Harburow Miner and that he was a wealthy ship owner. Richard married Ellen Wynne (d. 1832) in 1885 at the Dinas Chapel, Calvinist Methodist, Amlwch. Richard and Ellen Tyrer had six children, all of whom were born in Amlwch. They are listed below, next to the picture. The sixth child, Howell Tyrer (b. 1902), is pictured with his soccer team, the "Amlwch Jolly Boys" in 1922-1923. Howell is the person sitting second from the right.

Richard and Ellen Tyrer's six children were:
Richard “Dick” Tyrer (b. 1889) was the first child of Richard and Ellen Tyrer. He married Winnfred Barker.
Margaret “Maggie” Tyrer (b. 1891) was the second child of Richard and Ellen Tyrer. She married William Hughes Lemin in 1911.
John Henry Tyrer (b. 1894) married Kathrin Elizabeth Parry in 1948).
Ann Ellen Tyrer (b. 1897) married Owen John Evans in 1943.
Edward "Ted" Tyrer (b. 1899) was the fifth child of Richard and Ellen Tyrer. He
married Jane Jones in 1934. They had one son, Vaughn Tyrer (b. 1938), who was born at Holyhead (Anglesey), North Wales. Vaughn Tyrer married Isobel, who was from Scotland. Vaugh and Isobel had three children all born at Glasgow, Scotland. These were: John Edward Tyrer, Alan Vaughn Tyrer and Wendy Jane Tyrer. In 1972 Vaughn Tyrer moved to Ontario, Canada. Alan Vaughn Tyrer has several daughters. He also has a knowledge of the Tyrer family history.
Howell Tyrer (b. 1902) was the sixth child of Richard and Ellen Tyrer. In the picture to the left he is the person sitting second from the right. He married Grace Ann Hughes in 1929.
