Descendants of Mary Terrar (1857-1942) and James Rosser

Mary Terrar (1857-1942), the second child of Edward Tyrer (1829-1893) and Esther Griffiths (1833-1910) was born at Aberdare, Wales. She married James Rosser (1850-1916) in 1876 at St. Davids Church, Llanwonno Parish, Rhondda, Wales. She could sign her name but James could not sign his name. At the time of their marriage, he was listed as a collier. Both he and Mary were living at Blaenllecha in 1876 at the time of their marriage. In 1881 they were living at 45 East Road, Ferndale, Wales. In 1890 they were living at Railway Terrace. Mary attended Hermon Chapel in Pontygwaith, Wales. Her son Edward said that she was a teacher and mid-wife. Toward the end of her life, which was during World War II, Mary lived with her son Edward on Woodlands Road. She is buried at Lledyrdde, Porth (or Llanwonno, Glamorgan), Wales. James was buried at Llanwonno (Glamorgan), Wales. It is said that Mary and James and her husband had 23 children, but only eight survived. They were:

1) William James Rosser (1876-1961) was the first child of James and Mary (Terrar) Rosser who survived. He was born at Troedyrhiw or Cwmamon (Glamorgan) Wales. He married Hannah Davies. When his wife died, he took to the streets and hills. He was a roamer. He would turn up at his parents house ever so often, stay a night or two and would be off again. He is buried at Merthyr, Wales. They had one child:

  • Martin Rosser (b. 1897). Martin in turn had one child:
    Clarice Rosser, who is a retired school teacher living in Swansea.
  • 2) Martin Whitfield Rosser (1877-1923) was the second child of James and Mary (Terrar) Rosser. He was born at 8 Maxwell Street Ystradyfodwg, Ferndale (Glamorgan) Wales. The Civil Registration Index has him born in Merthyr Tydfil district, with the name Martin Whitfield Terrar in 1873.

(ter-jpg/V9-11-3.jpg) Martin married first Lillian Violet Duffey, born in 1890 at 5 Parson Street, Bedminster, Bristol. She was the daughter of Albert Edward Duffey and Mary Ann Jeffries. The second husband of Lillian Duffey was Richard Bevan, whose father was Thomas Bevan. Margaret Haywood states that the wife of Martin Whitfield Rosser was Blodwyn Jones, born at Stanleytown. Martin Whitfield Rosser served in the Boar War. He died in a colliery accident in Number Seven Pit, Ferndale (Rhondda Valley). Two others were injured but survived. He is buried at Llanwonno Church. Martin and his wife had seven children. They were:
  • Mary Elizabeth “Elfie” “Ivy” Rosser (1909-2000) was born at Pontygwaith (Glamorgan) Wales. She married Robert Bevan. She is buried at Thornhill Cemetery, Cardiff.
  • Hester Hannah Rosser (1910-2001) married Gomer Jones. She was cremated at Glyn Taff (near Pontypridd), Wales.
  • Edward James “Leslie” Rosser (b. 1912), married Clarice. He is buried at Ystrad Mynach.
  • Elsie May Rosser (1914-1985), married Richard Lewis. She is buried at Caerphilly Thornhill Cardiff, Wales.
  • Thomas John Whitfield Rosser (1916-1917). He is buried at Llanwonno, Wales.
  • Lucy Martin Rosser (1924-1999). Her dad died before she was born. She married first, Ken Rose and then Brian Hoskins. Later she married her first husband again. She is buried (cremated) at Glen Taff, Pontypridd (Glamorgan) Wales. She had one child:
    Shirley Rose was christened at St. Martins, Caerphilly. Shirley married Brian Faulkner and migrated to Whakatane, New Zealand in 1974. There Shirley Faulkner is a co-conductor of “Grandparents Raising Grand Children.

  • 3) David “Dai Mine” Rosser (b. 1880) was the third child of James and Mary (Terrar) Rosser who survived. He was born at Tylorstown (Glamorgan) Wales. He never married

    4) Elizabeth “Lizzie” Mary Rosser (b. 1885) was the fourth child of James and Mary (Terrar) Rosser who survived. She was born at Tylorstown (Glamorgan) Wales. She married Will Jones. They had one child:

  • Emlyn Jones, who had one son.
  • 5) Esther Rosser (b. 1887) was the fifth child of James and Mary (Terrar) Rosser who survived. She was born at Tylorstown (Glamorgan), Wales. She married George King, who was born at Wattstown, Wales. Esther and George had three children. They were:
  • Grace King (1918-1998). She was born at Wattstown, Rhondda Valley (Glamorgan) Wales. She married first Humphries and then Click. She is buried at Penrhys Cemetery, Tylorstown (Glamorgan) Wales. Grace had three children.

  • 6) Edward “Ned” Terrar Rosser (1897-1983) was the sixth child of James and Mary (Terrar) Rosser who survived. He was born at Pontygwaith (Glamorgan), Wales. He was in World War I, worked in the mines and lived in Tylorstown most of his life. He started picking coal at the surface at age 8. At age 13 ½ he went to work at the Wattstown Pit. He worked as a hauler, working with ponies. He married Mary Elizabeth Davies (1901-1981) in 1919. Mary was born in Tylorstown, Wales. At the time they married in 1919, Edward had been living at 55 Madelne St., Pontygwaith. She was living at 33 Church Terrace, Tylerstown. Edward and Mary lived at 23 Penrhys Road, Tylerstown. They both died at Tylorstown and are buried at Penryes Cemetery, Tylerstown, Wales. They had nine children:
  • Emlyn James Rosser was born in 1920 at Tylorstown (Glamorgan), Wales. He married Doris Trunks. They lived at Number 24, Penrhys Road, Tylorstown. He is buried at Penrhys Cemetery, Tylorstown, Wales.
  • Edward Wynford Rosser (b. 1922) at Tylorstown, Wales. He married Gladys and is buried at Birmingham, England.
  • Joan Margaret Rosser (b. 1926) at Tylorstown, Wales. She married Evan Richard Williams (1922-1973) in 1949 at Tylorstown. Evan was born at Pontygwaith, Wales and died at Porthcawl, Wales. Joan Margaret’s second husband was William Brynmor Williams. They moved to Number 5 Penrhys Road in 1957 and are still there. Evan and Joan Margaret had two children. They were:
    Keith Williams was born in 1956 at Tylorstown, Wales. He married Dawn. They live on Pehrhys Road in Taylorstown and Keith is a headmaster at a primary/junior school in Wattstown, Rhondda Valley. Keith and Dawn have two children:
    Kelly Angherd Williams
    Ann Llewellyn Williams.
    Margaret Williams was born in 1954 at home at 3 Church View, Tylorstown, Wales. She attended Tylerstown Infants and Junior School and Path County Girls Grammar School. At age 18 Margaret attended the Newport Art School. Margaret works for the Gateshead Metropolitan Council. She married Peter Gerard Haywood in 1976. Peter Gerard is from northeast England and attended the Newport Art School. He is head of information technology at a comprehensive school. They live at Springfield Village South, Newport upon Tyne. Margaret and Peter Gerard Haywood have two children:
    Sarah Joanne Haywood (b. 1979) is attending Newcastle University.
    Rhiannan Mary Haywood (b. 1981).
  • Gwyllum Martin Rosser. He never married.
  • Suzannah “Susie” Mary Rosser (b. 1928) at Tylorstown, Wales, married Richard Terrett.
  • John Ivor Rosser (b. 1932) at Wattstown, Wales. He married Ann Miles. They live at Number 6, Penrhys Road, Tylerstown.
  • David Henry Rosser was born in 1934 at Pontywaith (Glamorgan) Wales. He married Alwena Williams.
  • Muriel Elizabeth Rosser was born in 1940 at Pontygwaith. She married Brian Watkins.
  • Thomas Gwyn Rosser was born in 1944 at Pontygwaith, Wales. He married Carol Timkins.
  • 7) Sushanna Rosser was the seventh child of James and Mary (Terrar) Rosser who survived. She married Alfred Coleman.

    8) Bronwen Rosser was the eighth child of James and Mary (Terrar) Rosser who survived. She married Sam Davies. They had nine children:
