Text Box: Text Box: The head of the German V-2 Rocket project, Wernher von Braun, designed models of structures that could house large colonies in space. The gyroscopic wheel design of von Braun's creates artificial gravity by the centripetal force of the spinning ring, forcing all objects to the ring's sides. Wernher von Braun's wheel station works on the same principles as how a passenger on the gravitron amusement ride does not fall to the ground when the large drum is spinning quickly. This very old dream could indeed one day be the reality of colonies in space. Many ideas have emerged from science fiction, and this will also stay true for the future of living in space. As the NASA shuttle project is under in-depth examination, space colonies and other new forms of space travel will surely take the lead into the next generation of living in space. Maybe even one day, when the Cold War is over, the Soviet Union and the U.S. may share their secrets and mold a new and promising future.
