Engraving & Thermography Yes there is a difference. For starters, engraving has been with us for hundreds of years. Engraving is a highly skilled form of raised printing. The beauty of engraving lies in the contrasting thick and thin lines and in its three-dimensional quality. How does it work? First, ink is applied to an etched copper plate. Then, a weight forces the paper into the cavity and raises the surface of the paper, with the ink adhering to the raised surface. The result? Finely detailed, raised letters with a slight bruise on the reverse side of the paper. Thermography is also raised printing, but uses a different process. The lettering is flat-printed and the ink is dusted with resin powder while still wet, then subjected to heat forming a raised surface.
