INDIANS SCORE 22 POINTS IN THIRD, TAKE DOWN ARVIN 28-13
TEHACHAPI NEWS - Held in check by the Arvin defense for most of the first half, Tehachapi (5-3; 2-1 SSL) came alive in the third quarter to score 22 unanswered points to help notch the victory over Arvin (4-4; 1-2 SSL). Tehachapi was the first to draw points on the scoreboard in the first quarter when Byron Herman scored with 6:50 left in the first on a 5-yard run. The touchdown was set up on a punt block by Anthony Calvillo and a Corey Finley recovery at the Arvin 5-yard line, leading to the short yardage score. The two-point drive failed, but the Indians had the early lead at 6-0. Arvin answered the Indian score with 1:58 remaining in the second quarter, adding a point after attempt to take a 7-6 lead into the locker room. At the start of the third, Tehachapi opened up two drives deep in Arvin territory at the 28 and 18 yard lines respectively. The Indians took advantage of the field position in both series, with Byron Herman adding his second touchdown of the afternoon on the first drive on a 1-yard run at the 6:31 mark. Tehachapi’s Ehren Ochsenrider would add the second score with a quarterback keeper, racing 16-yards down the sideline to score at the 4:56 mark of the third. On both touchdowns, Paul Castro would add two-point runs to help Tehachapi go up 22-7. With 2:48 remaining in the third, Castro would put the final nail in the coffin from Tehachapi’s 45-yard line, taking a handoff up the middle and darting past the Arvin defense for the 55-yard touchdown. The two-point try failed, but the Indians had a 28-7 going into the final quarter. The Indian defense would assume the role of clean-up duty the rest of the way, allowing only one Cub touchdown in the fourth quarter to help Tehachapi record their second consecutive win. Tehachapi’s Joey Montez had his best defensive output of the year, recording 13 tackles and a sack. Other Indian leaders included Herman with 10 tackles and a sack, Kody Kelly and Louie Olofson with six tackles, Cory Finley with five tackles, and Tucker Kill and Kelly Lorenz with four tackles each. Lorenz also led the secondary with three pass deflections, while Trevor Hayes recorded an interception and two pass deflections.
