POST SEASON BOUND  Warriors set to enter first year of "new" D-III playoffs after big win over Golden Valley...Warriors enter as #5 Seed against the #12 Roosevelt Roughriders
Posted 11-12-04

SACK MAN: Chad Johnson (#52) had a HUGE game on defense against Golden Valley.  Taking advantage of the shotgun pass formations, Mountain Football's leading pass rusher let loose with a season-high five sacks.

Ok, so the first half was ugly.

And things sure did seem to get NASTY in the stands, booing...bickering...complaining...a lot of everything after Golden Valley took it to the Warriors to go into the locker room ahead, 7-0.

Then came the second half.  All became well among the Warrior faithful.

"We knew that this team had some weapons," said Warrior Head Man Steve Denman. "We told the guys at halftime that we were serious this week...that we weren't lying to them about Golden Valley's capability."

"In the second half the players started to believe us and pick up their game.  We adjusted well."

Four Sean Finley touchdowns later...

Ballgame.

But you do have to give credit to Golden Valley, though.  Not one senior on the football team.  Notta one.  Yet, they hung tough and have improved IMMENSLY throughout the course of their 2-9 (1-4 SSL) season.

And, you had to figure that the Bulldogs were getting better and better, indicated by their close 20-12 loss to Arvin in week 9.

28-7 seems like decisive victory, but you have to be concerned about the future with Golden Valley too.

This squad might be the team to watch out for in 2005, folks.  Remember, every single one of them are coming back...so get used to those Bobby Hinzo slant passes and long gainers....we'll see it again on the Mountain in '05.

On that note though, GREAT job to the Tehachapi secondary for their adjustments in the second half.  A few of those passes would have been long gains had the Warrior secondary not thwarted the pass play.  A few deflections here, a few interceptions there, and we have ourselves some Mountain Defense.

Playoffs are upon us again, with the seeding meeting to announce the bracket on Saturday in Porterville.  Should be a great next couple of weeks!

Hit and Fly Big Green!

And oh, by the way, congrats to Coach Denman on victory # 200!  WAY TO GO COACH!

WARRIOR REPORT:  #5 Tehachapi Warriors (6-4; 4-1 SSL) vs. #12 Roosevelt (Fresno) (0-10; 0-5 NYL)

The rankings have been officially posted on the CIF Website.  Tehachapi has a first round date with the bracket's lowest seed, the #12 Roughriders.

Tehachapi was hoping for a #4 seed, which would have given them a first round bye, but for whatever reason it was not to be.  The 35-28 win over Arvin turned out to be huge, giving them a leap-frog over #6 seeded Arvin, which enter the playoffs with a 7-3 overall record.  Hard to ignore that Tehachapi beat Arvin when the committee got together.

Things are looking positive for Tehachapi in the early going.  Delano is a struggling football team right now.  They lost hard to Tulare Western 49-6, lost to Tulare Union 7-6, and barely beat senioreless Caesar Chavez 17-10.  So, if you had to play a team in the playoffs coming off a bye, Delano would be the team.

BUT, Delano should have the opportunity to shore up their cobwebs before playing Tehachapi, and it will be a home game for them...so anything can happen.

Meet the Roughriders:  Roosevelt in action against Buchanan (Fresno)

As for Roosevelt, you got to hand it to the Roughriders and the Jo Jo Reyes for entering the playoffs after going through the season without a win.  Don't be deceived by the record, though.

They only lost by eight points to the Division III's number 2 seed Fresno last week, which won the Northern Yosemite League Title.  They've also been able to put up some points on like-teams, most notably Arvin, and three TD's against San Joaquin Memorial.

So...this offense does have some firepower for being a winless team.

Playing Golden Valley should have taught the Warriors a valuable lesson in not underestimating opponents.  Ignore the record Warriors, get ready for the Roughriders!

Hit and Fly!

Hat's off to the Tehachapi underclassmen on turning in two fine seasons!  Both the freshman and junior varsity programs won their games, with the Indians pummeling the Bulldogs 50-0 and the Braves completing an undefeated 10-0 (5-0 SSL) season with a 56-13 win.  The Indians finished 7-3 (4-1 SSL).  Good job both programs on a heck of a year!

THE NAIL IN THE COFFIN- Indians' Brad Taylor take s a QB keeper down the line of scrimmage in the third quarter against Golden Valley.  Tehachapi would surmount a 42-7 halftime lead and score a couple more to route the JV Bulldogs.

Still some football to be had this week.  The sophomore Golden Empire Youth Football Tomahawks are in the championship game on Saturday.  The game is set for 3pm on Saturday, November 12th at Garces High School in Bakersfield. If you can, come on down and support the Tomahawks to a title!

One Team Remaining!- The sophomore class is in the GEYF title game!  Congrats to the freshman, sophomore, and JV teams for making the conference championship, and the varsity for having a strong showing by getting a first round bye in their run in the playoffs. (photo by Mitch Smith)

A big congratulations goes out to Brandon Rooney and Brian Noonan for strong showings at the Central Section Cross-Country Championships at Woodward Park, Fresno on November 10th.  Noonan finished fifth overall in Division III with a time of 17:09 in the 3.1 mile course, while Rooney took another CIF championship victory home with a winning time of 15:51.

State-Bound:  Brandon Rooney will look to improve upon his 10th state finish from his junior season after winning his second-consecutive CIF championship.

As a team, the men's team finished fourth overall with 102 points.  Golden Valley won the meet with 62 points.  On the girls side, Tehachapi took seventh overall with a 203 score mark.  Mt. Whitney-Visalia won the meet with a score of 37.

Another congratulations goes out to the THS Volleyball team, who made the post season as the #6 seed in Division III!  Many of the Lady Warriors played great this year, with Leah Grounds and Julie Seaburg leading the team in digs with 121 and 117 respectively, Ashley Rugh leading the team in blocks with 74, Rachel Croy leading in assists with 270, and Lauren Shacklock leading the team in kills with 144.

Great job ladies on turning in a strong year in the season and the SSL!

Congratulations to Coach Denman on getting victory # 200 as head coach of the Warriors!  The playoffs are here, get PUMPED! GO WARRIORS
