PRE-SEASON COMMENTARY TEHACHAPI NEWS - Coming off a 7-3 (4-1 SSL) record last season in his first year as the Indians Head Coach, Chris Olofson is confident that last season’s success can be matched or bested with a fresh new crop of THS recruits in 2005. Initial indications for a strong season have already been foreseen in a scrimmage against West, with Tehachapi besting their Bakersfield counterparts on both sides of the ball in numerous trips to the endzone and bone-jarring hits. Playing well in the scrimmage was a host of Indians, led by runningbacks #45 Frankie Rodriguez, #22 Adam Mullen, and #7 Justin Hansen, who will be the quarterback this year for the Indians. #52 Vincent Ortiz and #54 Dominic Chaveria also look to be strong leaders in a deep pool of talent on the line-of-scrimmage. “We’ve been pleasantly surprised with the athletic ability with this incoming freshman class,” said Olofson. “Overall there is a great deal of depth at many positions which sometimes isn’t a luxury on the freshman level.” The depth is attributed to the freshman squad only losing two talented players to the junior varsity ranks in JJ Balkar and Derek Lange. The other 50+ Tehachapi players are primed and ready to begin a new season. Overall, the Tehachapi Indians will have many players on their roster in 2005 that participated in the Golden Empire Youth Football League (GEYFL) as Tomahawks, and will look to build upon the success they enjoyed there after reaching the championship in the senior 12-14 age division against Southwest-Bakersfield. The GEYFL competition features some of the upcoming youth that will be playing football at Centennial, Bakersfield High, North, Garces, and West high schools, so Tehachapi’s championship showing a year ago bodes promise of a strong run for the Tehachapi Indians in their new haunts of high school football. “Some of the positives we see having this year is the ability to not have as many players have to go (on offense and defense),” Olofson said. “This year we can focus a lot of the players to one specific position, which should help our stamina heading into the later stages of each of our games.” Back with Olofson this year coaching is legendary 18-year assistant coach Bruce Schkade, who himself has guided the freshman program to two SSL championships in 2001 and 2002 along with a long list of accomplishments at all levels of the Warrior program. Also assisting is long-time THS Coach Cliff Wiggins, Jeff McLauglin, and new coach Marcos Curiel, who is a familiar face to Olofson’s staff from his football coaching days in the early 90’s. The Indians will mirror their junior varsity and varsity counterparts this year, taking on Compton-Los Angeles September 8 and finishing up their pre-league schedule with games against Paraclete, Foothill, Stockdale, and Garces. The league schedule will have the Indians facing off with Wasco, Taft, Arvin, and Shafter before closing out the season against Golden Valley. “As the season wears on we hope to see the players realize their potential and have some success,” added Olofson. “We’re looking forward to getting the season underway.” |
