THE FALL OF TROY   Tehachapi offense gets going early in 35-7 victory over Foothill

Posted 09-24-05

Over the years Foothill has had many glorious highlights and players that have passed through their school, but this season the Trojan Empire took a backseat to Mountain Football.

It's been a tough year for Foothill, more-so for their star, Matt Peralta, who in many respects was the only bright spot for an out-matched Foothill squad on the road last Friday night.

The big + for the Warriors was getting the offense going early.  It seems traditionally of late that the Warriors would come out slow out of the gate and turn up the amps as the game progressed.

But against Foothill, with the exception of a few minor miscues in the extra point department, two drives of 68 and 66 yards found a home in the endzone for a quick Tehachapi 12-0 lead.

Another telling statistic for the Warrior win:  ball control.

Tehachapi almost doubled-up on Foothill in time of possession and number of plays...keeping the defense fresh and Peralta's shifty running on the sideline.

A big game for Tehachapi looms on the horizon in a face-off with Stockdale.

While Troy maybe burning, the daunting task of trying to corral a Mustang will prove to to be a tough task this coming weekend.

MOUNTAIN FOOTBALL VIDEO
Game-By-Game Video Highlights

A point of interest this week...pay close attention Saturday morning to see how Clovis East faired in Texas.  The Timberwolves are going to answer the age old question this week (or at least stake a claim at it)

Who is better?  Texas Football, or California Football?

Clovis East is essentially going into the lion's den of Texas Football, facing the Midland Lee Rebels.  Midland Lee is a member of 5A-District 3...a league that contains the heart and soul of high school football.  Some of the teams include late perennial state contender Abilene Cooper and "Friday Night Lights" Odessa Permian.

This game is where it's at, folks.  Best of luck to the Timberwolves!!  Go get em Clovis East, represent California well!

There's a new story in the Warrior Folklore section of the site on Carroll Killingsworth.  Check it out!
It was good to see a healthy Ralph Curiel back out on the field for Friday night action at tackle.  Welcome back to the lineup Ralph!

Be sure to check out the Warriors stat sheet at the end of every weekend, which will have the latest and greatest on the defensive and offensive statistics for mountain football.

THSWARRIORS.com PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

WEEK 3 THSWARRIORS.com players of the week go to Lance Lange and Mike Papac

#6 Lance Lange and #85 Mike Papac- PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

Lance Lange has been very consistent in all phases of the game through the first three weeks, and this past Friday Lange flexed his muscle on defense, logging in a season-high 10 tackles.  Lange also scored another special teams touchdown in the fourth quarter, but a flag called back a 66yd TD kickoff return after a Foothill safety.  For Mike Papac, the Warriors main receiving threat has been nothing short of spectacular both in blocking packages and in the flat.  Papac's excellent route-running translated into 77 yards and two TD's, the best output of any tight end in the central valley in week 3.

Congrats to Lance and Mike, THSWARRIORS.com PLAYERS OF THE WEEK!

MOUNTAIN  SCOUTING REPORT:  Tehachapi Warriors (2-1) at Stockdale Mustangs (1-2)

Traditionally the past few seasons, the match-up with the Stockdale Mustangs has served as a good indication of how the rest of the football season will go. Success against the Mustangs often times would translate into a strong performance in league and possibly the playoffs.

Tehachapi has had to face their fare share of strong players on the Mustangs’ side of the ball, some of the notable names being 1996 Quarterback David Carr, who is currently the head gun-slinger for the Houston Texans. There were also some Kern County stars for Stockdale last season, where the Mustangs arguably brought in their best team in school history to the Mountain with two-time All-Area offensive lineman Ryan Hernandez and Anthony Phillips and All-Area feature-back Francis Ojukwu.

Tehachapi may get a little reprieve this week with speedy utility back Kenny Shanahan (#2) doubtful heading into the contest with a foot injury suffered in a week one win over Atascadero. Omar Garza (#44), Stockdale’s starting outside linebacker, is listed as probable coming into the contest with a pulled hamstring. Expect both players to suit out against the Warriors, with Dave Boyt possibly putting them in on an as-needed basis.

With Shanahan and Garza out, there will still be plenty for the Warriors to contend with in the Friday away game.

Winning Attitude - Players like Gabe Bressler (#34) will hopefully bring with them the winning punch from last year's JV ranks in hopes of knocking off the 2005 Mustangs, which look to be Tehachapi's toughest opponent this pre-season.

The Mustangs boast a solid passing game led by Quarterback (#1) Tom Bresenski, who has thrown for 490 yards this season on 28 completions.  Bresenksi has found the endzone five times, hitting (#31) Tim Armstrong once, and (#21) Emmanuel Ojeriakhi and #20 Edward Webber twice apiece.

After taking Stockdale’s first three touchdowns for scores against Atascadero to pile up 183 yards rushing, Shanahan has been spelled in the backfield by Webber, who so far has averaged 100 yards a game in 302 yards overall on 54 attempts. Bresenski also likes to run with the football, having 124 yards so far on the year when the pocket collapses.

The Warrior passing game has been a highlight on the season so far with Tyler Hansen hitting various receivers for 254 yards and three scores to Mike Papac. The Tehachapi rushing game has also been solid, with 749 yards accumulated so far led by Robert Wright’s 264 yard ground assault. Both elements of the Mountain Football offense will need to be running in high-gear against Stockdale.

The Mustangs come into the contest 1-2, but the defeats were to respectable opponents in Bakersfield 28-26 and Clovis 14-0. This Friday night in Bakersfield, the Warriors will attempt to add their name to that list.
