HOMECOMING HICK-UP   Mountain Football loses a tough one to Garces, 30-13

UNDER PRESSURE-  Garces QB #18 Brenden Barkate was ellusive on the night, but Warrior down-lineman #4 Matt Deger and #50 Evan Bullard still managed to make their presence known.

Posted 10-09-05

It's a familiar sight on the win-loss board, 2-3.

We've seen it the past two years, and the week five tally has come back to rear its ugly head again in 2005.

Tehachapi had some major momentum in the second quarter against the Rams, but the halftime festivities would shatter the positive vibe for the Tehachapi offense, who went into the locker room up 13-10.

You can't really say too many 'what-ifs' in this one though, it was a sound victory for the former SSL king.  But, two nice scoring drives, the first starting at the Tehachapi 48 yard line and the other the Garces 32 yard line, showed signs of the Warriors primed and ready to put up even more points on the scoreboard.

But...

As Fanucchi's do (both David coached teams and the previously coached Vince teams), adjustments are what make the Garces machine roll...and they did just that to propel themselves to the 20-0 second half shutout and crowned-spoilers on Mountain Football Homecoming.

Props to Tyler Hansen in the game, who had 159 yards passing by game's end-count.  8-14 for 159 yards and a score is a pretty solid night for a QB, and it's the best output a Warrior gun-slinger has had since the 2000 season, when Tehachapi was led by Jared Romo under center (who is currently the starting QB for the Division IA SMU Mustangs).

Overall, it was a good team that Tehachapi faced on homecoming night....and hopefully the Warriors can re-group quickly to make a run at the SSL.

Looking over the shoulder, seeing Golden Valley whip Highland 61-0...and seeing Taft mount a nice second half scoring 19 points against West, it should be a dog-fight in league this year.

But, the focus should be on the here and now...time for Wasco this Friday night.

Hit and Fly Warriors!

THSWARRIORS.com PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

WEEK 5 THSWARRIORS.com players of the week go to EJ Muro and Mike Barboa

#1 EJ Muro and #45 Mike Barboa - PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

Big eye-popping stat was a Tehachapi receiver catching 85 yards in a game, and EJ did just that on three completions of 13, 41, and 31 yards.  Muro layed out for his last catch, a 31 yard diving grab, before going out of the game.  EJ made a lot of big plays to keep drives alive last Friday, giving him the nod.

When going back and looking at the film, Barboa was virtually everywhere on defense against Garces...and the final stats showed, with team leading 12 tackles in the contest.  Mike did have a minor miscue with a bobbled kick-off return, but made amends with a 10 yard gain to the Warrior 45 yard line the next time the Rams tried to hit him again on a kick-off return.

Congrats to EJ and Mike, THSWARRIORS.com PLAYERS OF THE WEEK!

MOUNTAIN  SCOUTING REPORT:  Tehachapi Warriors (2-2) @ Wasco Tigers (4-1)

Guess who's leading the league standings heading into the SSL campaign?

Taft?  Nope.

Tehachapi?  Nope.

Yep, you guessed it, the 4-1 Wasco Tigers.  Fluke?  No.  They're a good football team...one that Tehachapi should not take lightly.

You might look at the schedule...they played McFarland...Parlier...Selma...teams that are a combined 5-15...

but look at the scores.

They beat each team soundly, and went toe-to-toe with Coalinga before the Horn Toads pulled out a 16-3 win.

Keep in mind Warriors, Coalinga is 5-0, and Wasco had them at a score of 8-3 in the fourth quarter.

So, here we are.  The SSL (and I know I say this every year) is deep and talented this year.  Top to bottom, there are a lot of good teams this season, and even though the rest of the central valley doesn't think the Tigers can make some noise this year in league, this analyst says they can.

And they can start...or stumble...against Tehachapi.  The Warriors will have to dictate that outcome.

Most of Wasco's skilled-position players from 2004 have been lost to graduation, including QB Daniel Hinojosa and RB Nick Tijerina.  On defense, gone is a formidable linebacking corps that included Trevon Coleman and Alex House, while Eduardo Ramirez, Jacob Wallace (All-Area Honorable Mention), and Calvan Dugan will be missed in the secondary.

Back for the Tigers are SSL notables Benjamin Pallares (#1), Pedro Prieto (#50), and Baudelio Munoz (#10) on the line of scrimmage, and Stephen Bert (#40) at linebacker.

Also expect Leo Rios (#3) to get a bulk of the carries this year at runningback.

COME ALONG FOR THE RIDE - Robert Wright (#21) carried this Wasco defender on his way to a TD last season against the Tigers on homecoming night.  Tehachapi won the contest, 19-7.

Some bad news to pass along...guess what Wasco runs on offense?  Yep, the Double-Wing.  We've seen it before from Wasco...but now the Tigers has some serious some talent to back up the attack, with the centerpiece being Rios.

The Tigers have had success with it this year...racking up 1,182 yards of rushing.  And, in the fashion of most double wings, they can beat you when you least expect it with the pass.  The Tigers did just that last week with their best throwing output of the year with 108 yards in the air against McFarland.

Coming into the game against McFarland, Rios had amassed 264 yards on 48 carries...but the big-gainer so far on the year has been Eddy Garza (#30), who has 355 yards on 60 carries and three TD's this season.  But don't be fooled, Garza is good, but if Leo is on the field...make sure that you key in on #3.

The road to the title starts this week, and after an emotional pre-season...it's time to buckle down.

The new season begins in Tiger country.

Tehachapi owns an overall 19-10 record over Wasco.  For a brief history of each of the games that the Warriors and Tigers have played each other, click here.  You can also view 2004 Weekly Warrior analysis and 2004 game stats of the last meeting between these two teams.
