IN THE LINE OF FIRE   Shafter Opens Up Offense in Second Half, Warriors fall

Posted 11-05-05

As I was writing this story, Warrior long-time supporter Gary Childress sent me an email on his experience of what happened to him on his way home from the Shafter game.

It was innocent by most standards...stopping by Bakersfield's In-and-Out for a burger before heading up the Mountain for home.

But what turned out to be a routine food stop turned into a taunt-fest by other High School fans that were in the burger establishment, with jarring of "Warriors!  Warriors!" and "I didn't know you guys were that bad!" from the other patrons in the restaurant.

Gary didn't want to give them the satisfaction of a response, which was the right approach.

It's for the most part an unusual situation for Tehachapi football supporters to have to endure...that situation being a the potential of a losing season and the threat of a playoff berth possibly going by the way-side.

Losses like this, and the aftermath there-of, show point blank that it hits everyone...the players....the parents...the coaches....even the fans.

Everyone.

That's the price of tradition.  Once the opposition finds a chink in the armor...a breach in the consistency...they prey on it like a rabid dog.

The Warrior team that took the battlefield against Shafter has faced some serious adversity this year.  Those close to the team know what that entails.  But through it all...you fight on...which the Warriors did.

More often than not, you can't win all the games, true.  Some games you're expected to win on paper go by the wayside, double-true.

When dealing like losses like the one against Shafter, by in large there is really only one thing you can do when it's over.

Let the naysayers say what they will, turning the other cheek when the temptation of retaliation is at the forefront.

Keep you heads up Warriors, just like what Gary Childress was able to do on his way home.

Hit and Fly!
