JUNIOR VARSITY TAKES DOWN GARCES, 20-7

.

GOOD START - Freshman Dougan Patience carries the ball in second half action against Garces, while John King clears a path

TEHACHAPI NEWS - Led by Jason Hail’s interception, two fumble recoveries, four tackles, and a defensive touchdown, the Braves started the season on a high note with a 20-7 victory over Garces last Friday afternoon.

Tehachapi drove from their 36 yard line all the way to the Garces redzone to start the game, but a pass found the hands of a Garces defender at the one yard line for a Brave turnover. The negative play turned out to be successful output for Tehachapi, with Garces fumbling their first snap from scrimmage in the endzone and Hail pouncing on the ball for the early Tehachapi touchdown. Freshman Dougan Patience tacked on the extra point for the 7-0 lead.

The Braves scored again on their third drive of the game when Adam Mullen scored on a six-yard run with 0:47 left in the first quarter. Patience would again connect on the extra point try to make it 14-0.

Mullen would add another touchdown run in the third quarter on a 34-yard scamper to finish the game with 109 yards on 11 carries. The Braves’ Armando Salcido also had a good rushing output, getting 53 yards on 12 attempts.

Garces scored late in the fourth quarter to avoid the shutout and the final 20-7 count.

Along with Hail’s strong play on defense, Mullen, Justin Hansen, Cody Rogers, and Eric Harroun each had four tackles, while Kurtis Knudson had an interception. Joey Hack, Chris Fimbres, Cody Roebuck, and Harroun all recorded sacks in the game.

BRAVES START SEASON WITH FOOTHILL SCRIMMAGE

TEHACHAPI NEWS - The Braves racked up 153 yards of total offense last Friday led by Adam Mullen’s 26 yards on three carries and Angelo Loli’s 21 yards on six carries. Mullen scored on a 13 yard run on Tehachapi’s first series to highlight the evening for Tehachapi. Freshman Dougan Patience led the team in total rushing yards with 31 on six carries.

“We had a lot of good effort and the players worked hard and didn’t give up,” said head coach Ryan Grimes. “We let two or three plays get the best of us and we had some jitters in the first series but we settled down.”

Dominic Chaveria led Tehachapi’s defense with a host of behind the line of scrimmage tackles, finishing the game with four overall. Other interior defensive lineman showing strong effort included Cody Roebuck, Steven Brass, and Kevin Ruiz. Mullen recorded a fumble recovery while Kurtis Knudson had an interception to account for Brave turnovers.

Justin Hansen and Kurtis Knudson split time as quarterback for the Braves on alternating series.

“We’ll have to bring it together as a team,” added Grimes. “We have a big game this week and we’re looking forward to it.”
