STOCKDALE WINS ON LAST MINUTE SAFETY, 2-0
TEHACHAPI NEWS - The Stockdale freshmen came into their game against Tehachapi with an undefeated record and victories over Bakersfield High, Clovis, and East-Bakersfield, but the toughest opponent of them all for the undefeated 'Stangs was the Tehachapi Indians.
Tehachapi (1-3) was due to have their hands full against a very good Stockdale (4-0) frosh team, but the Indians never conceited to their guests, matching the Mustangs punch-for-punch before losing a heartbreaker in the final minute on a safety, 2-0.
With the clock winding down in the fourth quarter, Stockdale charged all the way to the Tehachapi six yard line with less than three minutes remaining in the game. On second and goal, Sigmund alertly squeaked through the middle of the line of scrimmage to recover a quarterback fumble with the score knotted at 0-0. The turnover sent the Tehachapi sideline in a flurry of cheers.
With Tehachapi taking possession at their own five yard line with less than two minutes remaining, Stockdale caught Tehachapi on a quarterback roll-out for a sack in the endzone, and the game's final count of 2-0 with 0:58 remaining.
Tehachapi received strong play from a host of players on defense, forcing four turnover on downs, two fumble recoveries, and an interception to hold the Stockdale Mustang offense scoreless.
Leading the way for Tehachapi was John Cramer, who completely shutdown the Stockdale running attack with 10 tackles, six for loss. Also receiving high marks were Andrew Howell with nine take-downs, Matt Santos with five tackles, Ryan Gaines and Daniel Baquerizo with four stops, Luke Mears and Luke Papac with three tackles, Nick Howell with an interception, and Robert Sigmund with four tackles and a fumble recovery.
Tehachapi will take on Roosevelt High in Fresno this week in their first road game of the year. Kickoff will be at 3:30 p.m.
