THS INDIANS EMPHASIZING TRADITION

The recent success of Tehachapi Frosh Football is well known in the league ranks, with titles collected in the 2001, 2002, 2003, and 2005 football seasons, making Indian football the no.1 program in the South Sequoia League in the new century.

Without a doubt, the future of the Warriors start in the freshman ranks and with head coach Bruce Schkade back in the head coaching helm and 43 athletes strong, there is excitement in Mountain Football country.

"We’re looking forward to a good season and we want to stress to these players how important it is to handle yourself on the field and in the classroom," said Schkade. "Overall we like the talent that we have, we have a lot of speed. And we’re lucky to have some great coaching minds to help us out this year."

Schkade himself is a 23-year veteran to Tehachapi in coaching and has guided the freshman program to three SSL championships in 2001, 2002 and 2003. Assisting Schkade is Doug Degeer, Jeff McLauglin, and Marcos Curiel, and 23-year coaching veteran THS Coach Cliff Wiggins.

“Coming into every year our goal is to win the championship, winning the SSL this season is what we have our sights on,” added Schkade.

Overall Tehachapi will be on the road for a majority of the season, with seven of their nine contests set as travel dates. Games at home for the Indians will be against Taft on Sep-11 and against Bakersfield Christian in the season finale on Nov-1.  Road games for Tehachapi include games against Garces, Ernest-Righetti (Santa Maria), Burroughs (Ridgecrest), Stockdale, Shafter, Arvin, and Wasco.

The coaching staff has high expectations for their arsenal this year, with players Aaron Ghiassy, Travis Farewell, Nick Phillips, Cameron King, Zach Timm, Phil Rhodes, Damon Franklin, Kash Knudson, Trevon Harris, and Levi Garrett a few of a vast wealth of talented athletes at the Indians’ disposal. Trent Gardner and Niko Taliulu are two other talented freshman that have been called up to the junior varsity ranks.

“We have a lot of speed this season,” Schkade said. “We have shown the ability to have some success this year but it takes the commitment from everyone. If the players buy into what we’re doing we should do just fine.”
