When I was in first grade, I remember looking through a Sears catalog, imagining I was on a desert island, somewhere I could have what I wanted and do as I wished. Books were the most enduring of my early interests. There will always be toys, in some form or other, but I claim no formal interest in toys. Well, okay, there's the plush toys, the figures, and so on, but these are casual things, for fun, not serious.
The earliest interest I recall was building and flying model airplanes, of the wooden glider type. Next came building model cars. Books and records developed along the same lines at the same time.
