The X-Men have been waging their secret war to protect humans and mutants a like, with the aid of S.H.I.E.L.D. to keep the secrets contained and the world from flying into a state of panic. The war has been waged for the better part of a decade now. Many X-Men have left Xavier's cause after either losing too much or dying and the last remanents of Xavier's team have gone missing prompting Charles Xavier to close down the school.
One year later anti mutant sentiment has reached an all time high and S.H.E.I.L.D. is no longer able to contain the "mutant problem." The government has released the Sentinel Initiative as a knee jerk response to anti-human terrorism. The sentinels are designed to detain or kill criminal mutants, sadly they are not discriminating between the "good" and the "bad", they just kill indiscriminately.
In light of these Xavier reopened his school six months ago in secret with the help of his few remaining friends to train a new team of X-Men
