Ms. Li gets the school to participate in another mandatory volunteering project; this time helping the less fortunate. Jane signs up to help patients re-decorate the interior of the children’s hospital and Daria volunteers to read to nursing home residents. Immediately after Daria signs up, Brittany and Kevin, of course, do the same, much to Daria’s disgust and horror. The Fashion Club decides to show their philanthropic side by collecting trendy clothes for the homeless (as Sandi so eloquently put it, “They're homeless; they're not tasteless.”).
Between her monotone voice and her choice of dark and rather depressing poetry, Daria successfully manages to fall from the favor of even the ancient nursing home patients. One threatens to hit her with her walker, while another gathers his last ounce of strength to pull his life support plug out of the socket (fortunately, the attendant was standing by to plug it back in). Meanwhile, Brittany and Kevin have enchanted their charges with their trashy romance novels and football comic books, Jane is enjoying painting violent scenes in the children’s ward, and the Fashion Club has managed to reject every single piece of clothing offered to their cause, as its all far too out of style.
Feeling a streak of compassion, Brittany invites Daria to her house to teach her to be more perky and appealing, but soon realizes that the cause is futile. You get to see the Taylor family in this one, complete with the totally evil little brother, the large-breasted, small-brained stepmom, and the idiot father.
The next day, the nursing home attendant puts Daria with a patient who actually seemed to enjoy her company, but who later turnes out to be deaf. Jane gets kicked out of the hospital for her violent paintings, and the Fashion Club ends up contributing a pair of go-go boots to the homeless.
