Through A Lens Darkly

When Helen is teaching Daria to drive, she nearly hits a dog because she has no peripheral vision, thanks to her glasses. So Helen gets really worried and decides that Daria needs to get contacts for driving. After asking Jane, who says that glasses are part of her persona, and Quinn, who gets all excited and tries to convince her to change her whole look, she nearly refuses, but instead calls Aunt Amy for a last opinion. Amy convinces her that having contacts is no more vain than looking at yourself in a mirror, so Daria finally decides to get the contacts.

The next day, at first no one recognizes her (I think they were pushing it a lot here), but when they do, everyone agrees that she looks better. However, they really irritate her eyes, and they get red and puffy by the end of the day, so she takes the contacts out.

The next morning (after a really weird dream), her eyes are still irritated by the contacts, but in a fit of mild vanity, she decides not to wear her glasses, either.

Jane, to her embarrassment, figures this out nearly instantly, as she bashes into pretty much everything that comes across her path, but Jane helps her to some extent by warning her as to where she is going. The day gets continually worse, and Daria finally feels like so much of a hypocrite that she locks herself in a bathroom stall. Jodie and Jane try to coax her out in vain, until Brittany comes along and speaks some of the only words of wisdom she has ever spoken (or will ever speak, for that matter) and Daria emerges.

After school, Helen tries to get Daria (who still can’t see) to go for an impromptu driving lesson.
