Dress #1
|
This is my First Dress. Deely School, California, circa 1987 This was the first costume I ever wore for Irish Dancing, and my mother sewed it! This Costume consists of cream woolen fabric made with a cheerleader pattern, and a maroon velvet jacket with lace cuffs and sleeves. The knotwork was an applique given by the school. We wore a red cape pinned with a tara brooch. I'm pretty sure we weren't supposed to wear medals on our costumes (according to a book on Irish dance costume) but don't we look cute anyways!

Dress #2
|
the "Riverdancey" Dress (aka instrument of torture, circa 1997) This was the first costume I had returning to Irish Dance, and was the first costume for Rinceoiri Don Spraoi Irish Dancers of Utah. This Costume consists of a black turtle-necked leotard and a black crushed velvet wraparound skirt with a green satin sash, and black nylons. In summer we "mixed things up a bit" (also saving us from heat shock) by wearing our skirts with our school t-shirt and poodle socks. That was, um, attractive.
+- it was in black, slimming the troupe, and had that whole Riverdance appeal important when opening up new territory in Utah.

Dress #3 |
This is my Third Dress (aka when you want something done, you gotta do it yourself circa 1999) We had a mighty controversy and civil war over a change in costuming... half the performing team quit... but we didn't change the costume. A friend and I got sick of it. We knew the best way to convince someone of something is to give them something tangible and real to see. So I designed and my friend's mom created this dress. It is your simple, princess line, V-necked dress with Green crushed velvet for the material, and a matching green lace for the sleeves. The troupe opted for black tights.
+ Well, I designed it, so of course I love it. The choice of materials made it more suitable for more venues, and the color and design easily revert back to Irish dance and "riverdance".

Dress #4 |
This is my fourth Dress. (aka Yay for traditional!)
This dress isn't actually mine, it was loaned to me. It was bought used in the 80's in Arizona! It has seen many facelifts and additions, and is a very fun relic of the evolutions of dresses.
+- It's my favorite colors, purple and green, and it's the first traditional solo dress I have worn in years and years. I love the antiquity of the dress.

Dress #5 |
This is my Fifth Dress. (aka a la Trinity) I tutor a group of dancers in a family called Crinne Hill (the dancers, not the family) And when we were preparing for our trip/tour in Ireland, we wanted new costumes. Each dancer picked their favorite colors for the simple embroidery. The dress itself is a black gaberdine, a-line with a tight neckline. It has attachable white shiny and black chiffon sleeves, and cuffs that can be worn with or without the sleeves.
+- This dress is great, it's versatile, simple, but has this line and elegance, looking good on everyone. And it reminds me of trinity, teehee.

Dress #6 |
This is my Sixth Dress. (The Power Academy) I designed this dress for the school that I assistant teach at here in Utah, the Power Academy. It is purple and teal Gaberdine with Teal Satin lining, and Red, white, blue, purple and teal embroidery. It is themed with dragons and references to their flame. The cape is a traditional kite-shape. It is accented with rhinestones.
+ This dress is a school dress, and fits it because it is simple, clean, and striking with the school colors.-
