The Wing Chun Training System

The Wing Chun training system that has been handed down through the years includes the following forms and exercises.

Sil lim tao (little idea)
This is the introductory form for students to train on the center-line theory, strength and endurance.

Chum Kiu (searching the bridge)
This is the intermediate form emphasized in the training of stances and footwork. The bridge in kung-fu terms means the forearm. Therefore, searching the bridge means the training on how to check your opponent's forearms.

Biu Je (shooting fingers)
This is the advanced form of Wing Chun and is intended to be a survival form. Techniques embedded in this form are deadly and are intended to be used only in emergency situations.

Mok Yan Jong (wooden dummy techniques)
This is the training in wooden dummy techniques via use of the wooden dummy. Many people think that this training is only used to toughen your arms, however, that is simply a by-product of this training. The wooden dummy is used to polish the execution of the different techniques one can use against the opponent. Through wooden dummy training, one can check the distance between oneself and an opponent such that, techniques are executed in the correct range, not too close and not too far.

Luk Tim Boon Kwan (6 1/2 point staff)
This is a simple but efficient weapon form performed with the long staff. Part of this form can be used in training for punching power in Wing Chun.

Pah Chum Do (Wing Chun Broad Sword)
This is a weapon form performed with two broad swords. These techniques are similar to those of Wing Chun "empty hand" style, but with moving stances. This is also the most advanced form in Wing Chun.

Traditionally, weapon techniques in Wing Chun are not for demonstration, but are passed down to selected pupils only. The understanding of Wing Chun forms can enhance the practitioner's understanding of the Wing Chun theory.

Supplementary to these basic forms are numerous exercises whereby Wing Chun practitioners train in the dynamics of the Wing Chun System. Chi Sau is the most important exercise in Wing Chun training and is practised soon after the Sil Lim Tao form.
