Time Travel.

Sermon by Dr. Bob Benchoff, June 19, 2002

"And it shall come to pass..." -- Jesus Christ, 3 Nephi p. 449 verse 30

Jesus Christ said "...that the time cometh,...". Jesus Christ knows the future. Jesus Christ dwells in the kingdom of God. As you believe, the kingdom of God dwells in you, according to God's good grace.

The police officer, the political candidate, the investor, the gambler, the cook, the gardner, all of these people, everyone, in general, wants to know the future.

If you bet on that horse, will it win the race? If someone holds a card, before you see it can you tell what it is? If someone is planning a merger, will you know about it ahead of time?

Did you ever get a gut feeling, or experience something that didn't have one in a million chance of happening? Did you ever make a seemingly impossible wild guess and get it right?

Even a thief can get a gut feeling that something's wrong, and whisper to a buddy, "Let's get out of here."

A rock can feel a vibration. Each rock has it's own velocity and natural harmonics. Rocks are cut and used as sensors to detect aspects of energy in the world around us.

Increasingly, we can detect where energy has been, and calculate where it will likely go.

One element, Barium, is good at turning electric energy into mechanical energy. Lithium is good at turning mechanical energy into electrical energy. It has been said that Barium speaks, and Lithium listens.

A composite material of Barium and Lithium can listen to itself speak. Such a material has also been very valuable in electronic sensing devices.

So we see that sensing (or knowing) what's around us increases when certain elements are combined.

God creates all, and as part of that natural forces can combine to result in something greater than the sum of the elements.

These become greater and greater building blocks: greater and greater sensors. Generally, a plant has greater sensors than a rock. A fish has greater sensors than a plant. Some fish, such as sharks, have electrical sensors on each side that can detect prey.

We can think of a human as having vastly greater sensing capabilities than a rock. For instance, while a rock can feel a vibration, humans might also be able to feel the same vibration. Humans might also see the vibration, hear the vibration, and even sense odors from disruptions made by the vibration.

But humans are not limited to the five senses. Humans can move a rock out of the path of a vibration, or into the path of a stronger vibration.

Humans can move themselves into the path of a stronger vibration.

Someone holds a playing card and asks you to guess what's on the other side. Some people say there's no way to know. The truth is, there are a multitude of ways to know: A. Can you see through it, is the card back-lit?, B. Is there a mirror behind the card?, C. Did you stack the deck?, and so on.

Can you predict the future and what card will be played next? Yes you can.

But aside from parlor tricks what can you do? Isn't it true that you once heard a noise and thought it was something else? Isn't it true that you once saw an optical illusion? Isn't it true that on the night of November 15th you fell asleep and your mind thought thoughts that you can't explain?

Were these accidents?...you tell me. Your events didn't happen to me (save through Jesus Christ), they happened to you.

Kings and rulers sought to see the things you see, and could not see them.

Why did you choose to see an optical illusion, when the truth was clearly evident? Likewise, why do you choose to not see what card will be played next?

Who are you that you should choose not to partake of what God wants you to have?

Prediction and prophecy are, at least in part, mental imagery. Time travel, at least in part, is of the body. Likewise, the concept of charity is of the mind; charitable works are of the body.

You do many works that other people may view as charitable, but let's discuss what you view as charitable, for your personal interpretation and understanding, for the greater glory of God.

Your charitable spirit enables your charitable works. Your predictive and prophetic spirit enables time travel. Just as in like manner, if you plant grape seeds, water, and nurture, you generally get grape vines.

It may be extremely rare luck that a grape vine sprouts where you want, without having planted a seed. Likewise, it is highly unusual that time travel appropriate to your means would occur without prophecy.

God's gift of prophecy allows you to accurately predict according to that prophecy. God's gift of prediction allows you to relate to the body.

So in conclusion, we find these concepts linked together, that for time travel we should have prediction, and for prediction we should have prophecy.

Having personally satisfactorily reached initial time travel ourselves (for the greater glory of God), then of course we can look to improve time travel for others and teach others, to help them be anxious to glorify God for God's wonderous works.
