I Would have rather watched an MST, but my cousin and “Aunt Amy” conned me into watching this movie instead.

I personally thought that it was a horrible idea from the get-go. Nothing good ever came of a television show turned movie. Particularly a cartoon based on a “graphic novel”. Plus, it came out in the summer and was released on video long before my beloved El Dorado. And I can’t stand Halle Berry. But it actually turned out to be well worth the opportunity cost.

I remember vaguely watching the show when I was little and my mom wasn’t around. It was one of the many shows I was afraid to let her catch me watching (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Batman, and Ghostbusters were others). So she was understandably shocked when Kelly and I “slyly” mentioned that we wouldn’t mind getting it for Christmas.

I’m not really sure what it is about this movie that I love so much. I have a feeling it has to do a lot with the Cyclops/Wolverine repartee. Particularly the Cyclops half. But the writing doesn’t hurt. There are some really awesome lines here, some of my absolute favorites being included in the scenes cut out (“Whose uniform is this?” “Mine.” “If you’re planning to read minds, there are safer places to start than Logan’s.” [I know I’ve misquoted these. I’m workin’ from memory, here]). The powers are just too cool. And besides, who can resist ribbiting every time Toad shows up?

The casting was almost perfect. And that’s really all I need to say about that.

While a couple of the scenes are not for the faint of heart, any quasi-sci-fi fan will love X-Men. I mean, if my dad, Mr. Robin-Likes-It-So-It-Must-Not-Be-Any-Good was quite interested and seemed to really enjoy it, most anyone would be. Course, Mom fell asleep, but she’s never liked anything even remotely sci-fi. But I loved it, and that’s what matters here at the Obsession.

X-Men was written by David Hayter, Christopher, McQuarrie, Joss Whedon, and Tom DeSanto, directed by Brian Singer, and produced by Lauren Shuler Donner, Ralph Winter, and Richard Donner. It was based on the Marvel comic book series of the same name.

Runnin’ again?
