The DF Army has a very similar history to the New Navy of Rifts Earth. (Rifts Underseas) The army was small and based in the artic regions. Before the Rifts, DF had been a secret, private organization that did big jobs for Big people. They were only known by top officials in powerful nations. Even the powerful feared them. But that fear kept people quiet. The base, called Red Artic at the time, was not known about by anyone. It was located deep inside the frozen tundra. This isolation made it impossible to find without knowing the exact coordinates. This isolation is also one of the things that saved most of the army from invading creatures that came out of nearby Rifts.
After the majority of the Earth was overun, the DF army began to emerge, Like so many of their fellow humans, a major percent were destroyed and disappeared in the ruins of the cities they ventured into. The army retreated after managing to kill a strange demon after it slaughtered 10 men. Their minor mega-damage weapons were no match for the demon's superior weapons. In their labs, they analyzed the strange and unusually powerful armor and weapons that the beast had on him. This is when DF started engineering their own MD weapons.
After analyzing the material, the small group of scientists came up with an armor alloy that was far superior to the current armor. Weapons were modeled after the basic design of the recovered weapon of the strange monster they had killed. This design was soon combined with their weapons and also evolved into the current DF weapons.
This gave them the ability to go out of the base and fight the invaders on fair terms. But they were not ready for magic. Psionics especially took them by surprise. But they resisted and over the years incorporated magicians and psionics into the ranks. The rest is history. They absorbed survivors into the army and destroyed many monsters. The monsters' weapons were taken and DF grew in power quickly.
