A. List and explain in detail different skills to study.

B. Explain how you are either doing them now or how you are going to adopt then in your study skills

1A. Read the textbook properly. Look at the captions and headlines. Look over pages, headings, section titles, options, pictures, charts, outlines, and anything else that is on there. Use the SQ3R method to read a textbook. This means survey, question, read, recite, and review. First survey things in the chapter before reading. Then, question headlines and see what headlines of sections are about. After you have done this, read the material, recite the facts, and review the facts. Have questions on the book before you start reading to get some answers. Look for a summary and a glossary to help you. Get a basic idea on what the book is about. Look at the pictures and captions to see what the chapter is about. Question headlines of the chapter and see what the headlines are about.

B. I have not been reading a textbook properly. I always just read the text in a textbook and don’t pay attention to any of the headline or captions. I also haven’t been using any specific method to read a textbook. I think the SQ3R method will help me in reading a textbook better. I will also read all the headlines, captions, etc. in a textbook.

2A. Properly take notes. Make a line down the center of your paper and on the right side write your notes. Then on the left side make different types of notes on your notes and use it as a study sheet for tests. Summarize word you don’t know and use often. Only put down the important details the teacher tells you. Put down anything on your notes that the teacher puts on the board. Notes help improve your attention and comprehension. Notes also give you a record of what you have heard. You’ll need a notebook, or folder to take notes and a properly sharpened pencil. Also, add room for different sources of notes. Helping notes helps you stay awake. Always on the top of your notes, write what they are about. You want to get down the main points, key words, and important information. Use Patterns of Organization which is the Chronology, Cause and Effect, and the Compare and Contrast patterns. The Chronology pattern is such things as In the first place, three main points are, etc.. The Cause and Effect pattern is things like the reason for the result or why the second result is. The Compare and Contrast pattern is such things as similar, different, on the one hand and on the other hand, etc.. Review notes at the end of class. Write concise notes.

B. I have not been doing these things in my notes. I have a whole different way of taking notes which is good for me. I think that the Patterns of Organization are a really good idea and I am going to start using them. I think that leaving a left margin in your notes for a study guide is a very good idea and it is very useful. I am going to incorporate these things in my study skills

3A.Properly prepare for tests. Use a study group to study your test. Write down notes to study for test. If you guess, always go with your first instinct. Go back at the end of the test and re-check it. Never put stray marks on a computer sheet. On a multiple choice test, always guess because it is better to guess than to not write down anything at all. Go with your first instinct on multiple choices. If you get marked down for getting the answer wrong, then don’t put anything unless you know it or are pretty sure that it’s correct. On a multiple choice test, use elimination to eliminate the answers you know are wrong, if you got it down to 3 answers, then don’t answer the question unless there is no penalty for a wrong answer. On essay tests, take time to save time and look over all the questions and make sure that you understand them. Jot down notes on each question of the test and the tests will have shape. Budget your time depending on how hard the questions are and make sure that you do the easy questions first. If you come back later to harder questions, the answer might come to you. Most teachers will give partial credit for partial work that is done. When you study for a test, predict the types of questions you are going to get. Predicting the questions, might make the answer much easier to get. Pay attention and take good notes on them and spend time reviewing the information. Look at the notes as though they were an outline. Look for Patterns of Organization on the test which are explained above in how to take notes. The teacher reviews the material a lot that is going to be on the test. Compare and Contrast notes and set your priorities. If you can’t finish a question, do an outline.

B. I have been using many of these things when taking tests and they have come out to be very useful. Reading all the questions before I start and budgeting my time helps me a lot in finishing the test on time. Predicting questions, I think that is one of the best test taking skills, helps me a lot. I am going to use a lot of Patterns of Organization in my test since I haven’t been doing that a lot. I have been using the techniques for taking a multiple choice test and they have worked for me.

4A. Set realistic short and long term goals. Have long term goals for big projects. If you have a big project then do it early. Get ready for upcoming projects and don’t lay off assignments till the last minute. If you are doing a big assignment spread it out in the time you have. Make sure you fulfill short term goals also. If you have an assignment due next time, make sure you do it and are not up all night doing it. Be consistent and always do your homework at a proper time and make sure that the time you start is dependent on the amount of homework you have. On short term goal, budget the time you have also,

as on the long term goals.

B. I have a lot of times set goals and usually I have realistic goals. I need better long term goals since I am not very good at keeping those. Spreading out assignments into time segments is one thing that I am going to improve on so that I won’t have to do the really big projects in the last couple of days. I do need to work on my short term goals and make sure that I am consistent as to what time I start each day on my homework. I am usually supposed to start at 7 o’clock but start at about 8 or 9 o’clock.

5A. Follow health rules. Have a proper diet and get enough nutrition. Get enough sleep each night and every night.

B. This is sometimes a real problem for me. I usually don’t get enough sleep because I usually stay up late doing assignments. I have a proper nutrition and diet so that isn’t a problem for me. I am going to have to make sure I get enough sleep each night which will be one of my long-term goals which I will also try to improve in.

6A.Suck up to the teacher. Sell happenings books so you are on the good side of the teacher. Turn in assignments on time so you appeal to the teacher. Don’t make the teacher mad and don’t argue with the teacher. Raise your hand a lot and answer questions the teacher has.

B. I suck up to the teacher sometimes and try to be on the good side of the teacher. I plan to have good relations with the teachers and to sell some happenings books.

7A. Use memory techniques. Use the memory techniques you like best like. Practice your memory techniques you know best so you know them well. Find out which memory techniques are the most effective for you and use those. Don’t use repetition because that is the least effective memory skill. If you connect something with emotion, you remember it good.

B. I have some very effective memory skills which I use. The best one that I use is that I study the test material at the time before I go to sleep so my brain reviews the material while I am sleeping. I use repetition a lot, and I am going to try to stop and use emotion to memorize the things I need to. I will also adapt some new memory skills.

8A. Establish the proper study environment. Have the proper room temperature and the proper lighting so you can see well enough to read and write. Music can enhance learning so use music that is harmonious, don’t listen to music that is noise like heavy metal. Listen to music that doesn’t have lyrics because you tend to listen to the lyrics.

B. I have a proper study environment in my room with a big halogen lamp and a normal lamp and even a desk lamp so the room is well lighted. The room also has the right temperature so that’s good. I don’t listen to music while I am studying but I think that I may begin doing that and see if it helps me study better.

9A.Make study cards for difficult concepts. For concepts that you don’t know well enough, make study cards which you can use to study for tests. Write up your notes on different study cards and use them along with other things to study for tests.

B. I never do this. I may write organized notes in an outline but I don’t use study cards. I think that I might start using study cards because it is a really good way of studying. You have all your facts on study cards and you can study them one by one and go through them a couple of times.

10A. Get ahead in class, never get behind. Try to get ahead of the class like complete your assignments early so you can study. Never get behind and always turn in assignments on their due dates and always be up to date on notes, etc.. Study your notes right after you take them and not always the night before the test.

B. I sometimes do get behind in class, which I would like to stop right now. But, I also get ahead in class sometimes by studying on a daily bases and doing extra credit. I am going to try to get ahead in my classes because if you do get ahead, it is very good for you.

11A.Never miss class. Try not to ever miss class unless it’s for a really important reason. If you are going to miss class have someone bring a tape recorder for you to record the lecture so you don’t miss anything or borrow somebody’s notes and copy them. If you know you are going to miss class talk to the teacher and ask for assignments, etc..

B. I try to never miss class and I almost never do. But there are times when I have a really have a bad fever and I can’t come to school for up to a week. But this happens rarely. In the future, if I am sick I am going to have somebody bring a tape recorder because I haven’t been doing that before. I have been finding out what went on those days I missed although.

12A. Sit in front of the class so you can hear and see well. Also sit in front so the teacher can see you well. Siting in front of the class makes you hear and see better and take better notes.

B. I am going to try to sit up in front of the class. I usually sit somewhere close to the front of the class so that I don’t have a problem with this.

13A. Participate in class. Raise your hand and ask questions and also answer questions the teacher asks. Pay attention to the teacher and take notes on the lecture. Do the activities in class.

B. I participate in class a lot but I think my participation could be better. From now on I am going to try to ask more questions and answer more questions. I am also going to pay attention better, to what the teacher says.

14A. Ask questions in class. If you do not know something, ask it. If you misheard something, ask the teacher to repeat it so you know it. Don’t just sit there and pretend as if you know it and ask the teacher and write the thing down in your notes.

B.I don’t have a problem with this at all. I’ve asked plenty of question in class before so that I know everything and so that I understand everything. I plan to keep this way and ask a lot of questions.

15A. Use study groups. Get together with some people and form a study group. Don’t study with people like your girlfriend so you’re not studying human anatomy instead of biology. Use these study groups frequently, especially when there’s to be a test next day. Use these study groups to organize your notes and find out anything you have missed. Use your study group if you have been absent from class.

B. I’ve only used a study group once or twice in my lifetime so I am going to start using study groups. I plan to use study groups to discuss the material with other people and things that I do not understand. Study groups would be a good way for me to improve my test score.

16A. Type your assignments when possible. Type your assignments so they are legible. Type your assignments also so that you can save them and print out two copies so if you’re assignment gets lost, you will have an extra copy. Also it’s way easier to make corrections because you can go right inside the assignment and change anything you need to change and don’t have to write your assignment all over again.

B. I type all the assignments I can and type all the big assignments. I am typing more and more assignments because I think it is very good, the work is very legible, you can spell and grammar check it, and you have a copy. I am going to start typing more and more assignments because it is a good way to do things.

17A. Proof read everything that you write. Proof read you’re writing, to make sure you haven’t made any errors. Use the spelling check to correct any spelling errors you might have made. Use the grammar check to correct any grammar errors you have. Make sure you’re writing makes sense.

B. I Proof read most of the things I write because I wouldn’t like to leave any careless errors in my writing. I want to proof read all of my writing so that they have no errors and are easy to read and to understand.

18A. Make a running vocabulary list of different vocabulary words so that you know them. Add vocabulary words to your spell checker if it doesn’t have them. Have the vocabulary list so you understand them and know what they mean. Add any vocabulary words to this list that you do not know.

B. I am going to start doing this to improve my vocabulary in whatever subject. I am also going to add a numerous number of world to the Spelling check so I don’t have to push "Ignore" every time I come across one of them. I might keep this vocabulary list on sheet of paper or on note cards.

19A. Translate difficult material into your own words so you know what it means and understand it. It is easier to study it if you have it translated it into stuff you know, so that you are not baffled and know it. This is especially good for studying. Teach someone this difficult material if possible so they understand it. If someone asks you a question about it, explain it to them so they know what it’s about.

B.I do this on all my notes and put notes by things that I do not understand. This has come out to be very useful to me and I use it every time when I take my notes. Sometimes I write stuff that I don’t understand later on so want to avoid doing this so I can have notes that are easy to study from.

20A.Think of new examples from your creative genius. Have this so you can relate to things and understand the material better. Memorize these examples so that you know them well. Always be thinking and pondering of new examples.

B. I am good at thinking of new examples and it comes very useful to me. When I want to describe something I just think up an example and definition to describe it. I have some common examples which I use a lot and interpret them in a lot of different ways.

21A. Turn wasted time into study time. If you have nothing to do and are bored, don’t just waste your time, but study your notes and materials for tests. Instead of just watching television and wasting time, study. Also reserve some time for studying each day. With this you can make your time, useful time.

B. I do not ever do this. I lie around and watch television instead of studying. From now on I am going to start studying instead of wasting time so that I can get good scores on tests which will help me get a better overall grade.

22A. Review notes at the end of class. Instead of just packing up your things and waiting by the door to launch out at the ring of the bell, go over your notes while you still got some memory of them. Some mistakes that you made on your notes, correct them because you might not know what it is later on.

B. I am going to start doing this so that I can have notes that are easy to study. It would also be easier for me to apply the notes better if I corrected them and understood them better. I think that this is one of the skills that’s going to come useful to me.

23A. If you miss class, find out what happened or what was said. Use your study group for finding this out. Call up people and find out what happened and what you missed. Find out about assignments also so you can do them. Make sure you didn’t miss anything if you missed class.

B. Every time I am sick, I do this and then I make sure to catch up. This helps me not to stay behind. I call up some people and ask them for the assignment and I borrow the notes of the period from someone.

24A.Finish work early so you don’t have to do it at the last minute. If you finish it early, you will then have time later to do other things. Do this also so that you don’t have that much stress.

B. Finishing work early is really a hassle for me. I am going to start doing this although I usually want to do this but I can’t set my mind do it. I know it would help me a ton if I started doing this and I will try. I do it sometimes but very little.

25A. Prioritize homework, especially if you have a lot of it. Plan your homework out in different days so you don’t do it all at the same time. In the weekend do it on Friday night and Saturday also so you don’t have to do it all on Sunday. Do important homework first .

B. I always prioritize homework from the most hardest to the easiest. I do the hardest and longest first and do the easier and shorter homework last. This priority benefits me very much and it works for me.

26A.Do homework at a regular time and place. Do homework at the library or in your room and make sure that there is plenty of quiet so that you can concentrate on your work. Start your homework around 7 o‘clock and make sure you do not do your homework too late at night so you can comply with another study skill which is follow health rules meaning that you get enough sleep. Do this also so that you are not as tired and that you can think clearly.

B. Usually I do my homework at the right place but not at a right time. I often times go to the library into a study room to do some of my homework if I need to do some research and look it up. Sometimes I stay up too late doing homework and that is my only problem. I am going to try to improve on this.

27A.Limit television and other distractions such as friends, music, and noise. Turn of the radio and the television so that you hear no noise and that can’t distract you. Make sure you are alone and no friends are with you because they can be a distraction. Make sure that you don’t hear any noise so that doesn’t distract you. If the vacuum cleaner is running, close your door so that you don’t hear it. If your house isn’t quite enough, then go to a library into one of the study rooms or just at a desk and there, it will be quiet.

B. I usually shut the door of my room when I go to study. I turn of all the music and make sure there isn’t any noise. I don’t study with friends being there so they don’t distract me. The ideal place for me to study, is at the library which I often times do study at.

28A. Maximize use of class time. If the teacher gives you some free time or time to do homework that is due later on, do the work and don’t just sit around and wait for the class to end or talk with your friends. At the end of the class instead of packing up, review your notes while you remember them so you don’t get confused when you study them.

B.I use up class time pretty well. Whenever the teacher gives some time, I work on homework so I don’t have as much at home. I use almost all the class time pretty well except the last 5 minutes, in which I’m usually standing by the door, waiting for the bell. I am going to improve in this and review my notes the last 5 minutes.

29A. Get extra credit. Whenever an opportunity for extra credit arises, take it. Even if you don’t need the extra credit, still do it because you might need it later on so to be sure do all the extra credit. Extra credit will improve your grade and relieve some of your troubles. Extra credit is like back-up and can help you.

B. I get extra credit whenever I can and it helps me out a lot. Extra credit improves your grade and gives you a feeling of security in case you miss an assignment. Extra credit has helped me out a lot and I usually always do it.

30A. Never lend papers to people without having a copy and never have someone turn in papers for you . If you lend papers to people without having a copy, the people might be irresponsible and lose the papers or damage them. If you have people turn in your papers, they might be unreliable and lose the paper or not turn it in for you. If you have to have a paper turned in, have a parent come turn it in or give it to someone you know who is reliable and keep a copy.

B. I don’t have a problem with this. I never have had people turn in assignments for me and I don’t lend papers without having a copy. This helps me keep track of all my papers and it makes sure that I don’t loose any papers.

31A. If you are sleepy in class, write faster an if you have to stand up. Writing faster will make you be more aware and less tired. If you stand up, you are sure not to fall asleep and it will wake you up a bit. Stay standing as long as you need to so you don’t remain tired.

B. I am going to start writing faster and start paying mote attention each time I get sleepy. If I am really sleepy then I get up and go get a drink from a water fountain. This arises me a little bit and helps me stay awake.

32A. Put your name and period on all papers. Do this so that the teacher knows who’s assignment is it and so that he can give you credit for that paper. Also, put the period so the teacher doesn’t have to find the period you’re in. Do these two things so the teacher can grade the paper fast and doesn’t throw it away. You and the teacher will both save a lot of time and trouble if you do this.

B. I always do this. I put my name, my period, the assignment, and the date on every assignment I turn in. I also do this on my notes so I know which notes are those. I’ve also hadn’t had a problem with teachers loosing my assignment since I started doing this every time.

33A.Follow directions and listen. If you follow directions, it will make things much easier for you and you will have lots less trouble in class. For example, turn in assignments on time and if the teacher says they are due at a certain date, turn them in when they are due. Also, listen in class so that you know what’s going on and know what to do.

B. I am going to try more to follow directions and listen instead of just spacing out. Following directions and listening helps me stay on track and understand what’s going on in class. I’ll need to improve in this aspect also a little.

34A. Learn from your mistakes. If you ever do a mistake, don’t do it again. If you ever forget to put your name on the paper, never do it again. Also if you see that you have a weak point in something, work on that so you don’t have that weak point. If you are getting something on test’s or assignments constantly wrong, improve it.

B.I am able to learn from my mistakes. Usually, if I make a big mistakes or keep making little mistakes, I don’t do them again. I make sure I know what types of mistakes that I make frequently so I don’t keep making them.

35A. Assume responsibility, know what is your fault. Don’t just make excuses for everything and assume some responsibilities. If you have an unfinished assignment assume responsibility and don’t just say that you left it at home, and so on. If you do something bad, assume responsibility for it and don’t just coward away from it. In another words, don’t just always be making excuses.

B. If I do something wrong, I am able to assume responsibility for it and not just make excuses. I am able to assume responsibility on what assignments I turn in and don’t turn in. I am also able to identify what is my fault and what is not.

36A. Think before opening your mouth. If you know you’re going to say something idiotic or stupid, don’t say it. Think twice before you say things so you don’t look like an idiot and save yourself a lot of time.

B. Before I ask a question or say an answer, I think a little bit about if it’s reasonable. If it’s not fully reasonable I give it some deep thought to see if I can say it or modify it and say it. I don’t like to be caught off guard saying stupid things so I watch out for this.

37A. Learn and use your learning styles. Know what learning styles best fit you and use them. First you have to find out what type of learning style you are, and then after you know, use it and studying and work will be much easier. Know if you are Extraverted, a person who looks for facts and ideas or an Introverted person, a felling individual. Knowing these thing will help you to have better study skills.

B. I have a lot of different learning styles. I think that there are many learning styles that are good for me which I need to find. But I got a whole bunch of my learning styles learned and I use them a lot on all sorts of different things. I like using my own personal learning styles.
