The Phantom WHAT???

Like I even had to hint at what my first article after May 19th, 1999 was going to be about. You didn't think for a second that I would write something about the recent turn of events in the Starr investigation, did you? Well, all "Starr" puns aside, I want to talk to you about the movie.

I done seen it.

Acting on a tip, we went to Payson, UT, to see it on opening night. Most people in Payson, UT, though hard-working, God-fearing individuals, are obviously lacking in mental prowess, as evidenced by the fact that they do not see the point in camping out weeks in advance for tickets to a movie.

Now, I'm not proud of the fact that I have yet to see the film in a town with a population of over 500 (people), but I really had no other choice.

There we stood, on opening night, right out in front of the Huish Theater in Payson, UT, waiting to experience Episode I. My mind went back briefly about 16 years to a time when we stood outside of a theater in New Jersey to see Return of the Jedi. Then my mind went forward a few years to the time when I will get to wait in line with my children to see Episode III. Unless, of course, Lucas dies before they make it and one of his close friends decides to pick things up where he left off. In that case, I can pretty much guarantee you that it will be worth avoiding.

The theater seats 625 (people), so we figured if every able-bodied adult and child in Payson came to the film on opening night, AND some of the Spanish Forkians commuted from "up narth," we'd still get into the showing we wanted.

Well, they pretty much all came out for the show. Well, except for the guys that drove by on their way to hick night at "The Spittoon" in the cars honking at all the people waiting for some movie about people who live in space. One guy actually "hung his tushie" out the window of the passenger side as they drove by. I was contemplating whether or not he understood the vague space reference ("mooning") or if he was just an idiot, but I lost my train of thought when they started to let us in!!!

Not a let-down. I liked the movie. I liked it almost as much the second time, and the third time was even better than the second time. Maybe the fourth time will even be better...

During an online chat with my Dad in Tokyo the other day, he decided to use his new Dragon Speech Recognition software. It sometimes has trouble with understanding his speech. He asked me if he would be as thrilled to see Episode I as when he first saw "Lucas Guy Walker."

Well, the long wait is over. Now there are only 3.5 years until Episode II. I hear some theaters still have tickets available for the midnight showing on May 15th, 2003. Don't fall victim to one of the classic scams and buy advance tickets. We all know the world will be just pulling out of the Y2K gliches in 2003. Huish theater in Payson, UT, however, will have no problems with Y2K. They don't have any computers. So, feel free to get in line now. Just watch out for rebel booty...
