Two Coat Rubber Lining Adhesive System

Introduction

Polyloc 170 & 270 is a two coat adhesive system for bonding natural rubber based linings to various kinds of metals. Polyloc 170 can also be used as a one coat adhesive to bond chloroprene rubber based compounds to various metals.

Polyloc 170 & 270 are used in the manufacture of various industrial items used in the mining, chemical and other process industries including the lining of storage tanks, scrubbers, pipes, barges and mineral handling equipment.

Preparation of Metal Surface

This is the most critical and important step for any rubber to metal bonding application. The metal surface should be properly cleaned of all contaminants such as oil, grease, rust, scales, dirt, etc. by suitable mechanical and/or chemical methods.

Grit/sand blasting and wire cloth abrading (to a gray white finish) are commonly established mechanical methods of metal preparation for most metals, and give excellent results. Residual particles must be removed from the metal surface by solvent cleaning.

Application of the Adhesive

Polyloc 170 & 270 have to be stirred thoroughly for 10 minutes before and intermittently during use. The adhesive may be applied by spraying or brushing with roller or brush. The application of a thin and uniform coating of the bonding agent, free from excessive runs, tears or fatty edges is an essential condition for optimum bonding results.

It takes 30-40 minutes for the adhesive films to dry at ambient temperatures. Care has to be taken to ensure that the primer film has dried fully before applying the cover coat.

A third coat of a tacky rubber solution can be applied over the dried cover coat film to provide closer contact between the surfaces to be bonded. This solution is usually a 15-20% rubber content solution in solvent made out of the same rubber compound that is being used for lining purpose. Allow the solution to dry for 15-20 minutes after application.

Vulcanisation / Bonding

Ensure proper rubber lay up to provide intimate rubber contact with the metal. Polyloc adhesives allow good bonds to be obtained by various curing methods like autoclave curing (120 ~ 170oC), open steam curing (75 ~ 95oC) or chemical curing (ambient temperature).

Cautionary Information

This product is meant for industrial use only. It contains highly volatile aromatic solvents; keep product away from heat, direct sunlight and open flame. Vapors may be harmful and prolonged breathing of vapors and mists should be avoided. May be harmful or fatal if swallowed.
