Notes:

There were some great finals in the 1-A. How about J.R. Kennedy vs. Tony Fabrizio. That was some fantastic scrambling and determination by both wrestlers with Kennedy finally ending up on top in OT. What a great match! Another fantastic match with Dallas Edwards gaining a takedown on rival Shawn Marshall to win at 125 pounds and the Outstanding wrestler to boot. Edwards win also delivered the mathematics to the Badgers as the gold trophy was now in their hands. Piute was a distant third while Altamont slipped past Rich for fifth by a mere .5 of a point. Whitehorse had a strong showing with Everett Thomas gaining another title in convincing style. The Badgers got a lot of mileage out of their 171 pounders as Tyrel Taylor and Trevor Peterson making the finals and giving Kerry Anderson's squad 40 big points out of their 203 points they earned.

16. Grand County 44.0

17. Kanab 17.0

Notes:

There was no drama in the team race as Millard won easily. Juab was a solid second. Big surprise team has to be Enterprise who with some outstanding individual efforts got past Richfield for third place. South Summit edge rival North Summit to stay in the Top 5, definitely the loss of Robbie Atkinson hurt their chances for the silver trophy or at least a Top 3 finish. There were plenty of upsets and some of them were against Millard wrestlers as Bryan Whitaker was knocked off by tough Adam Lacy 11-4. Michael Degering (South Summit) knocked off Devan Stevens as well. In a great semi-final match, Robert Sanders used some effective pinning combinations to come back on Jake Woolstenhume to win 7-5 after falling behind 5-0. In one of the better finals Clint Monsen won a somewhat controversial 6-4 decision over previously unbeaten Casen Eldredge of Monticello. Millard placed an incredible 17 wrestlers in the field including 8 finalists and 5 champs! Troy Mortenson capped off an undefeated season by winning the 119 pound class.

Notes:

Two 3-A schools (Granite and Judge Memorial) do not have wrestling programs at this time. Wasatch did it with a good combination of star power (five finalists, three champs) and depth. The controversies at North Sanpete did not really effect the team race as the Hawks finished a solid second with a great team effort. The two suspended wrestlers would not have made the difference in North Sanpete catching Wasatch. Lehi has made some great progress with six finalists and three champs. Transfer Tyson Thompson did not disappoint earning the gold medal. He had a classic semi with Cody Sweat of Wasatch in another case of Bracket Formula Interruptus. Lehi's Rodney Sager, who wrestled 112 most of the season burst onto the 103 scene and walked away the champ defeating tough Kaden King 5-3 in OT. Jake Swenson gave North Sanpete its only champion by whipping fellow freshman Carson Brown (Wasatch) in the first round. Swensen had four first round pins and won the Outstanding Wrestler as did Gerard Habibian of Dixie who won all his matches without going past the first stanza. Andrew Hochstrasser won his third state title and will go for four next season. Habibian won his third state title and was a four-time finalist. Zach Elliott won his battle with two-time state champion Chris Petersen to nail down his third state title. Jans Jorgensen, a very impressive football athlete (headed to Kentucky to play), won the 215 pound title after giving up basketball and just in his first year of wrestling. He is ranked #3 in the Super Rankings. Dallin Norton, with the absence of rival Tyler Lee, stormed through the 275 pound division and won easily. Matt Casperson won his second title while Tosh Mackintosh avenged last year's semi-final loss to Morgan Jeppeson with an explosive headlock pin against the Bear River grappler in the final.

Notes:

Olympus looked real good leading the tournament after the first day, Timpanogos still was considered in the driver's seat and most suspected that Spanish Fork was in trouble. But the Dons took control with an incredible second day. They matched Timpanogos with five wrestlers in the finals and with their JV talent and overall depth the tournament was in their hands. Olympus could place only two wrestlers in the finals and had a rough going in the wrestle backs which opened up the door for Mountain Crest to get into the Top 3. Payson was a distant fifth but put three into the finals. There was tight race for sixth won by Pleasant Grove who bounced back after a bad first day with plenty of wins in consolation. Region rival Mountain View placed seventh while Lone Peak thanks to a default win by Matt Ah You tied Sky View for eighth. Orem pushed by Box Elder for tenth thanks to Mark Freeman's big win in the last match of the night. It has been a while since Box Elder has been out of the Top Ten and the Bees failed to produce a champion or a finalist for the first time in a long time.

Region 7 would have to be considered the strongest 4-A region. All five of their schools placed in the Top Ten. They had seven of the 14 individual champions and had the highest percentage of their qualifiers place. Region 6 fared well with two Top 5 teams in tournament winner Spanish Fork and Payson. Region 4 was a bit down this year as Mountain Crest and Sky View made the Top Ten but Box Elder was a bit off this year. Region 5 was Region 5. Olympus gave their region a strong showing. However, this region failed to produce a state champion and has not since 1998-99 and had just two finalists. Daniel Hola came close to pulling out the gold medal, but Freeman pulled off the Sudden Death win.

Bracket Formula Interruptus was a big problem in this tournament. Cyler Sanderson met Seth Wright in the semi-finals as did Cameron Dansie meeting Jeb Clark. Another semi-final meeting of the probable two best wrestlers took place when Jaime Thornblad met Luke Lofthouse. One of the biggest upsets was Kyle Robins over Spencer Dinkins in the first round. Robins took advantage and made a great run to the finals knocking off Region 5 champion Alex Hedquist and Region 4 champion Adam Hubbard 4-3. Jason Warner came back after a third place showing at region to knock off T.J. Bingham of Sky View by a single point. This was big for Spanish Fork and got their great night of semi-final wins going. The best championship final was Cody Burdett riding out Steve Robertson to win the 135 pound final. The 215 pound final disappointed as Garrett Elliott was injured early in the match delivering the title to Matt Ah You. The rest of them went pretty much as expected and most, with the exception of Freeman--Hola, weren't competitive affairs.

21. Hunter 5.0

Notes:

Region 1 flexed its muscles with five of the Top 5 team finishers from this rugged region, perhaps the best overall region in wrestling no matter the classification. Fremont doubled up in some of the upper weights like 189 and 275 and placed two wrestlers in these weights. Fremont wasn't just upper weights as Dwain Martinson brought home the gold at 119 pounds as well as Ben Harding at 140 pounds. Big Bad Billy Green gave the Silverwolves their third state champion, Green's third state title. Green did have to survive a Sudden Death squeaker against tough Rob McConkie of Jordan in the semi-finals before beating football stud Jason Speredon of Granger in the final. It was a tight team race but Fremont began to show they had the edge on the second day. Weber's fortunes went sour as the Region 1 champion had Craig Tennant fall to Brighton fabulous freshman Talon Knox in the quarterfinals in perhaps the biggest uspet in the tournament. Viewmont, the first day leader, just couldn't hold on and gradually fell back to a solid third position. Craig Mock beat tough Shanwn Brunson at 152 pounds in perhaps the division's toughest weight class. Defending champion Logan Essig finished third. Essig's brother Landon got his elusive state title improving from third to first in each of his three years. Landon Essig is a junior. Kyle Thornock repeated as state champ for Taylorsville. However, he was one of the few bright lights for Region 3, which was very weak this season and had five of bottom seven teams in the state tournament.
