"Jordan Freestyle Wrestling Garners 20 Timpanogos Medals"

(Sandy, Utah) March 10, 2002 -- Jordan Freestyle Wrestling competed in an open freestyle and folkstyle wrestling tournament at Timpanogos High School in Orem March 8-9, 2002, and took 20 medals between the two styles. Nine of the 15 competitors in the folkstyle tournament held Friday brought home medals; of the 26 competitors in the freestyle tournament on Saturday, 11 brought home medals.

"It turned out to be a really tough tournament," said Jordan Freestyle Wrestling Coach Bill Kilpack (III). "Again, we had a record number of kids competing, and there were big numbers in just about every weight class. The kids got a lot of mat time, and learned some new things in every situation. As long as they take at least one thing away from every match, then they've achieved something."

Of the 11 freestyle medals earned, two gold were awarded to Jordan Freestyle Wrestling team members Connor Montgomery of Riverton, who wrestled Flyweight (ages 6 and under) 50 lbs., and Tanner Eddington of Sandy, Bantam (ages 7 and 8) 75 lbs.

Winning silver were William Kilpack of Sandy, Bantam 50 lbs.; Jacee Lucero of Sandy, Midget (ages 9 and 10) 55 lbs.; Colton Montgomery of Riverton, Novice (ages 11 and 12) 85 lbs.; Ky Lucero of Sandy, Novice 90 lbs.; Ryan Jessop of Midvale, Schoolboy (ages 13 and 14) 75 lbs.; and Josh Pappas of Taylorsville, Cadet (ages 15 and 16) 112 lbs.

Taking freestyle bronze were Ray Hinnen of West Jordan, Bantam 55 lbs.; Carlin Kennelly of Salt Lake City, Schoolboy 75 lbs.; and Graham Butterfield, Schoolboy 130 lbs.

Of the nine folkstyle tournament medals earned, three were gold. Gold medallists were Connor Montgomery, Flyweight 50 lbs.; William Kilpack, Bantam 50 lbs; and Ray Hinnen, Bantam 55 lbs. Taking silver was Carlin Kennelly, Schoolboy 75 lbs. Taking bronze were Austan Hinnen of West Jordan, Flyweight 45 lbs; Jacee Lucero, Midget 60 lbs.; Cody Wharton of West Valley City, Novice 65 lbs.; Graham Butterfield, Schoolboy 130 lbs; and Josh Pappas, Cadet 112 lbs.

Also competing from Jordan Freestyle Wrestling in the freestyle tournament were Austan Hinnen, Flyweight 45 lbs.; Brandon Peterson of Sandy, Bantam 50 lbs.; Gavin Munson of Sandy, Bantam 50 lbs.; Austin Peterson of Sandy, Bantam 60 lbs.; Cort Butterfield of Sandy, Midget 75 lbs.; Reid Butterfield of Sandy, Midget 70 lbs.; Ty Jones of Sandy, Midget 70 lbs.; Clayton Maxfield of Sandy, Novice 70 lbs.; Dylan Carlson of Kearns, Novice 65 lbs.; Spencer Larson of West Jordan, Novice 65 lbs.; Michael Lund of Sandy, Novice 75 lbs.; Jakob Parker of Sandy, Novice 85 lbs.; Colton Windfelder of Sandy, Schoolboy 105 lbs.; and Danny Huntsman of Sandy, Cadet 98 lbs.

"Every match in every tournament is a learning experience," said Coach Bill Kilpack (Jr.). "We saw a lot of improvement in our first-year wrestlers over last week, and got closer to beating some tough kids that we've lost to in weeks past. That's what it's all about -- working to become more effective and successful each time you step on the mat."
