ANDREAS PETER ELIASON
(Written by Anna Charlotte Anderson Larsen) Anders Peter Eliason (1841 - 1911)
Mother: Elin Eliason
Andreas Peter Eliason was born December 21, 1841 at Alingsas, Sweden, the son of Elias Hanson and Elin Anderson. He was the second child of a family of three; one girl, Annie Christine and two boys, Andreas Peter and Johannes. His father died when Johannes was born. His mother was unable to support them all so Andreas, then seven years old, was put in the poorhouse where he remained until he was 14 years old. Then he lived and worked for two old maids (the Swanest Ladies). They were very unkind to him, overworked and underfed him; besides they whipped him often. Later he hired out to a fisherman for several years as a fisher boy. Then he worked for a family named Eliason, from whom he earned his way to America. The same family that grandmother worked for and came to America with. Andreas spent two years in Sweden on a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Later in life an incident occurred that was most significant, wherein the power of healing was manifested. It was Sunday and his neighbor Mrs. Bessie Cowley was very sick and alone. She crept to the door and called Jim Peterson, a neighbor passing by, asked him to get someone to come and administer to her or she would surely die. He called Andreas from Sacrament Meeting and together they went to her house and Andreas administered to her. She was immediately healed and arose from her bed. She told it as a miracle and Andreas testified as to the power of the priesthood. Andreas broke his hip from which he never recovered. He died March 4, 1911. He was a strong built man and his entire life was filled with activity. He was a hard working man. His education was hardly none, but through his alertness and experience, his knowledge was increased so that he became influential in teaching not only the gospel but the principles of sound farming, agriculture, and good citizenship. He was considered the strongest man in Cache Valley. He could wrestle three men at one time. My grandmother and mother often told me that when my grandfather was sent to Logan to find work, my grandmother was so lonesome for him she packed her few belongings in a shawl and started out to walk to Logan. She had been living in Grantsville. She walked the entire distance from Grantsville to Logan and had only one short ride. She slept on the ground in the canyon and could hear the wild animals howling at night. When she reached Logan she was directed to a family by the name of "Tailor" Hanson. She could speak no English but sent word to Andreas who was working in College Ward and he came to the Hansen home and great was the rejoicing at being reunited again.
