(boswellia thurifera)
History:
Garlic is a member of the lily family, and has developed under cultivation during the last 5000 years. Garlic was an important healing agent to the ancient Egyptians, and still is to modern Egyptian Copts. Garlic cloves were found in the tomb of Tutankhamun and at Saqqara. The pyramid builders were reputed to consume large quantities of garlic and onions to help increase endurance.
Use:
Garlic helps lower blood pressure and lowers cholesterol while raising HDL (“good” cholesterol) levels, helps prevent yeast infections and boosts the immune system, making it a useful preventative for cancer and heart disease. Garlic is reputed to relieve pain, promote healing, help with colds and flu, stimulate digestion, stimulate sexual libido, treat insomnia and repel internal parasites. One clove of garlic a day may be the best dose as a preventive measure. Garlic should be added to cooked foods near the end of the cooking period to avoid destroying volatile constituents
Cautions
Some people may find it difficult to digest, and it may cause flatulence. Of course there is always the consequence of the notorious “garlic breath”. For both problems, you can chew fresh parsely, and enteric coated garlic capsules are available. When having a romantic dinner for two, make sure you both eat the same thing- then you won't mind!
Always:
Be sure of the identity of any plant before you use it. If a preparation makes you sick or gives you a rash, don't use it, and throw it away! If your condition does not improve, see your doctor. Be sure to let your physician know EVERYTHING that you are taking!
